Wearable Technology Market Forecast 2015-2020: Leading Companies in Smartwatches, Fitness & Activity Trackers, mHealth, Cameras, AR Glasses & e-Textiles

6.2 Boston Scientific

Boston Scientific is a medical solutions company specialising in cardiac and cardiovascular

equipment. The company counts 23,000 employees worldwide. Its contributions to wearable

devices are mainly in the cardiac rhythm management arm of its business, in the form of

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs), placing and ICD leads, and remote monitoring

systems.

See Table 6.3 below for company information.

6.2.1 Boston Scientific’s Products and Strategy

Boston Scientific is one of the key innovators in the medical field for wearable and implantable

technologies. These are related to the field of interventional cardiology, including pacemakers and

sub-cutaneous defibrillators. The company has earned a number of awards for its S-ICD system, a

wearable device that defibrillates without touching the heart or placing dangerous electrical wires in

its vicinity.

The company has also created a number of products allowing families to track relatives with

Alzheimer’s. In 2012, Boston Scientific struck deals with major wireless carriers to support a new

generation of products that incorporate sensors, accelerometers, GPS and technologies that use

cell towers to help triangulate positions and locate people. Family members use them to track

toddlers as well as Alzheimer's sufferers. Doctors and military medics have adopted the technology

to remotely track the health conditions — EKG readings, body temperature, heart rate, and stress

or dehydration levels — of recently released patients or soldiers on dangerous assignments.

See Table 6.4 below for a selected list of Boston Scientific wearable technology.
