A proposed new railway serving
London and the South East,
running north to south,
connecting with London
Underground and Crossrail.
When will it happen?
The aspiration is that Crossrail 2 could be
operational by 2030, but the project is in
very early stages of planning and no
decision to build it has been made.

Northern Powerhouse
initiative has brought
together the main cities
in the North of England
to develop a transport
strategy for the North.
• In Rail a key area of work will
be the upgrade of existing
infrastructure to facilitate
faster journey times and the
rolling out of the HS2 phase
two network for high speed
trains between cities.
• Some of this work has already
started in Network Rail Control
Period 5 and will continue in to
Periods 6 and 7.
