Frayer Model
Definition: Groups that focus on foreign
policy and relationships between multiple nations. They include members or
representatives from several nations and do work in several countries.
Characteristics:Causes:
• Military / Political interests• Humanitarian interests• Economic interests
Effects: • Cooperation between countries• Less burden on individual countries to act.
International OrganizationsExamples:
The Red Cross sends medical, food and water supplies to Haiti after the 2010
Earthquake.
Non Examples:Barack Obama announces in August 2010 plans to pull all troops out of Iraq by the
end of 2011.

• One way to a categorize organizations is by whether they focus on: – Military / Political interests – Humanitarian interests– Economic interests
Types of International Organizations
W What: An economic agreement between Canada, Mexico and United States to remove all restrictions and taxes on imports and exports among businesses in these countries.
E Effects: More trade opportunities between the businesses in these three countries, Opposition from US businesses and support from Mexican businesses.
E Example: No tariffs on goods sold between US and Mexican businesses.
P Purpose: Created in 1994 to expand the economy of the three nations.
North American Free Trade Agreement
North Atlantic Treaty OrganizationW What: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a mutual defense
alliance of nations from Europe and North America.
E Effects: Protects nations from attacks and promotes cooperation among nations in handling world threats
E Example: NATO troops entered Libya to protect civilians from attack from dictator, Muamar Khadafi.
P Purpose: NATO, created in 1949, was organized to defend member nations from the possible aggression of the Soviet Union and the nations of Eastern Europe. It has now expanded to react to aggression in other countries.
United NationsW What: An organization with more than 190 member countries that maintains
international peace and security. There are many sub- organizations within the United Nations that focus on specific issues, such as health, human rights, security.
E Effects: Increases diplomacy among countries, increases peaceful relationships
E Example: The United Nations Security Council applauded the news of Osama bin Laden's death.
P Purpose: Created after World War II to attempt to stabilize international relations and handle the world’s problems through diplomacy.
World Bank / International Monetary Fund
W What: The World Bank Group is a specialized agency of the UN Economic and Social Council that provides financial assistance and advice to developing countries.
E Effects: Development and modernization of poor nations but problems with massive debt in these poor nations.
E Example: World approves loan of $300 million to East African Countries to upgrade major roads in the region
P Purpose: It was initially created to provide loans for rebuilding those countries devastated by World War II and has since expanded its activities by providing loans to middle-income nations and creditworthy poor countries around the world for development programs.
International Red CrossW What: International Red Cross provides relief to victims of natural disasters
and wars.
E Effects: Helps those that are victim of war, natural disaster and disease outbreaks.
E Example: Red Cross helps to reunite families in Rwanda who were torn apart because of the civil war and genocide.
P Purpose: Created in the late 1800s to be a neutral party in a war focused only on helping wounded soldiers and civilians, and it now is recognized as providing help to all in non-military crisis, too.
