I wasn't on a paid shoot, but just testing a new camera set-up. At 3.29pm on 09/23/2014 the copter crashed. Here is what happened from my perspective: About 1.5 minutes into the flight I got an error message that my transmitter (a fully charged Graupner MX20) didn't have any connection to the Cinestar anymore - even though it was only about 100ft away. I checked throttle and all other input functions and but didn't get any response. The Cinestar started slowly, very slowly drifting back towards our location, which I interpreted to be the come home function. Though instead of stopping above the spot where we were standing (and took off from), it kept moving. It seemed to be locked at a perfect straight line, same altitude, just slowly moving past us. As it was moving towards a groups of people and eventually would have hit a bigger street I tried my last resort option: turning off the transmitter and rebooting it.

I think I didn't even get to press the button to turn on the RF, when the copter just fell out of the sky. It hit a tree mid descent and then slammed onto the ground. Pretty much everything broke that could break. All booms, most props, every piece on the MoVI, the lens snapped off, camera cracked in half and so on. Attached are some photos that show the destroyed Cinestar. I also attached a screen shot of the GPX (flight log) file and the actual GPX file. I sent all the information to an expert to interpret the data but he couldn't give me more input than I could take from looking at the data. I also sent everything to Mikrokopter, the company that makes the Flight Controller and GPS electronics that I am using - but haven't heard back yet. Long story short what happened: For some unclear reason the connection between my Graupner MX20 transmitter and the Cinestar got interrupted, the failsafe and emergency process got started but instead of landing exactly where it took off, it slammed into a tree and crashed. The battery on the transmitter as well as the aircraft/receiver had plenty of power and was nowhere near to a critical state. To my knowledge there is no cell phone tower or similar close by that could affect the RF quality that much. At this moment it’s a mystery to me and I can't understand what really happened. As far as the damage, pretty much every piece on the MoVI MR10 broke, all 4 booms broke, all of the eight T-Motor 17" CF propeller got damaged, the eight KDE 4014 motors incl. the wiring got damaged, two Freefly 6S 9,000mAh lipos got damaged - one caught on fire. A Turnigy 4S 5,000mAh lipo and a Freefly 4S 2,650mAh MoVI battery got damaged. The HDMI converter and Black Mamba 5.8gHz transmitter got also damaged. Basically I will have to rebuild the Cinestar from scratch and start all the way at beginning - most importantly replacing the Graupner MX20, as that seemed to be the original cause of this incident. Please let me know how if you have any questions or if I should clarify anything and please let me know how to move forward with this claim.”
