5 Project Activities: Thermal Test Chamber 1/2
• There is no facility to measure the overall
thermal performance of refrigerated vehicle
bodies in South Africa
• Industry stakeholders identified such a
chamber as the single most important
measure to reduce GHG emissions in
refrigerated transport
• A road-map for the establishment of at test
chamber has been drafted by the Working
Group and was approved by the Steering
Committee

Seite 12
5 Project Activities: Thermal Test Chamber 2/2
• Voluntary agreement on the future use of the test chamber was signed
by key industry stakeholders to prove their commitment and,
consequently the usefulness of the investment by German government
• Two-step tendering processes for operation of the hall in SA and
international ATP consultancy have resulted in awarding of
• SABS Commercial as the operator
• Cemafroid as the ATP consultant (espec engineering, training)
• Start of official operation expected for early 2016
• A Sub-Committee “Thermal Performance of Refrigerated Transport “
has been established under SABS TC 086 and is going to draft a
standard for the testing of refrigerated vehicles

5 Project Activities: Body Design & Manufacturing
Estimated fuel and carbon emissions savings
through improved body insulation
Estimated annual
savings for a 13.4 m body :
3,500 - 5,000 l diesel;
10 - 15 t CO2 p.a.

5 Project Activities: Body Design & Manufacturing
The establishment of a test hall and introduction of standards will result
in thermal requirements for bodies that cannot be met at the moment
Identified options to support South African body manufacturers
• Manufacturing and design support in order to build a pilot box according
to the proposed design adjustments by each beneficiary by Q1/2016
• Joint group training on general issues (insulation, thermodynamics etc)
• Provision of a tool to simulate the overall thermal performance
Tendering processes for the open source design and manufacturing
training has resulted in awarding the Italian company EGA
Beneficiaries are 5 major refrigerated body manufacturers
Specific South African requirements have to be considered (strength,
durability)

5 Project activities: Technology Development
Pilot on hydrocarbons with Transfrig and Tshwane University
• Cooperation to jointly develop, demonstrate and deploy the use of a
novel refrigeration system with non-fluorinated hydrocarbons (Propane)
• Involvement of GIZ Proklima expert Daniel Colbourne and Prof Huan’s
team from Tshwane University of Technology
• Proposed Schedule
• October 2014: leak simulation tests, check possible sources of ignition
• End February 2015: conclude revised system design for R290,
increased energy efficiency and reduced refrigerant charge
• End May: build R290 prototype
• June – September: carry out testing (esp leak and safety issues)
• October – February: field trials

5 Project activities: Trainings
Training Course on Transport Refrigeration
• Open Trade Training Centre (OTTC) is developing a training course on
Transport Refrigeration Technologies
• 6 modules of 1-2 weeks
• 1st training was kicked off in May 2015
Training Course on Cold Chain Logistics
• Improvement measures: Good practice guidelines, innovative
technology and software, purchasing strategy for equipment, trainings
• Contents are currently being developed and will be provided to every
interested institution
• Suitable training institutes are welcome to jointly develop training
