The Artwork of Mr. Stephen Ritchie
This slide presentation is a series of 65 oil paintings donated by Stephen Ritchie of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to the needy in the City of Wilmington.
Mr. Ritchie donated these paintings after viewing the CBS 60 Minutes segment about the economic
situation in this community.
It is Mr. Ritchie’s intent that the proceeds from the sale of his artwork go to the Clinton County Homeless
Shelter.
In December of 2009 I had the opportunity to view the artwork of Mr. Stephen Ritchie. After a careful examination and a somewhat personal critique, I found the work to be an interesting mix of color, texture and shapes. Mr. Ritchie layers his oil paints creating an impasto rich with colors that beg to be touched. His tactile canvases bring to mind the surfaces of post-impressionist artists. The handling of paint and use of vibrant colors shows a Van Gogh influence. The large number (65 in all) of relatively small paintings range from non-objective to abstract with many containing recognizable imagery. I found this considerable output of work to be filled with emotion and energy. One can easily see that Mr. Ritchie has put forth much time and effort to produce this impressive series of paintings.
