HMW Questions

• 10/11 HMW Questions:• HMW make sure our house has good insulation?• HMW make an efficient use of heat?• HMW convert the solar energy?• HMW keep a steady heat source?• HMW use windows effectively?• HMW make the heat last longest?• HMW use dark colors to our advantage?• HMW use materials with a high thermal mass?• HMW use our knowledge of the sun to our advantage?

Brainstorming • Some of the ideas we came

up to convert the solar energy (into heat)?

• Dark Colors• Solar Panels• Insulation in Walls• Full (constant) contact with

sunlight• Warm Material-Fabric, Felt• Amplifier-Magnifying Glass• Water

Brainstorming • Some of the many ideas we

came up with to make sure our house has good insulation were

• Dome Roof• Latch for thermometer• Foam• Wool• Insulation in Floor• Put it out of the shade of

trees-Open Space• Black Box• Double Wall with insulation

in between

Prototyping-Phase 1

- Basic Idea:- Four Walled House- Double Walls- Towels (Insulation)

Page 6: Solar house ppt jlucero

Prototyping-Phase 2

- Dark Surface Idea:- Painting Everything Black

- Walls- Insulating Foam

- Using Black Duct Tape

Page 7: Solar house ppt jlucero

Prototyping-Phase 3

- CD Design- Four-way CD Pyramid- CD’s on inner Walls

Page 8: Solar house ppt jlucero

Prototyping-Phase 4

- Finding Heat Conservers- Collecting Stones- Spreading them in the bottom of the house

Page 9: Solar house ppt jlucero

Prototyping-Phase 5

- Allowing more light in:- Adding CD’s on top

Page 10: Solar house ppt jlucero

Prototyping-Phase 6

- Final Touches - Sealing plastic covering- Attaching roof to base- Adding foam to bottom to reduce conduction

Testing

• Our goal was to get the base temperature of the House above 68 degrees

• We achieve a temperature of 12-15 degrees• The final result was great but disappointing

because we found out how to make a solar house colder than the outside temperature, yet we never achieved our goal.
