What assistance dogs are meant for?

The ADI which is professional organization which trains the assistance dogs terms a service dog

as a dog which is type of assistance dogs only. Assistance dogs are guide, hearing and other

revise dogs which assisted people having any kind of disability for functioning independently.

1. Guide Dogs- these dogs are given training for assisting people having visual impairment. The

dogs help the individual to navigate his or her environment. Such dogs are trained for leading the

handler on a straight clear line. It depends on the handler for giving instructions and directions to

the dog. The dog is given training for saving the handler from any kind of obstacles. Such dogs

are even capable of reading the traffic lights and signals. These kinds of dogs refuse to go ahead

if there is any obstacle.

2. Hearing dogs= these kind of dogs alert their handlers who may be deaf or hard of hearing to

the sounds produced in their environment which the handler is not able to hear like the sound of

alarm, smoke- alarm, door bell, baby crying, glass breaking, etc.

The dog respond to the sounds which they’ve been given training for and thus alert the handler.

3. Service dogs- these type of dogs are the dogs which include all the assistance dogs. Any dog is

a service dog if it is not a guide dog or a hearing dog. This category of dogs include the seizure

dogs, mobility help dogs, dogs for kids with autism, psychiatric help dogs and medical help

dogs.

Certification

The Federal Government and laws do not ask the dogs to get any kind of certifications for

becoming an assistance dog. But the organization which trains the dogs certifies the dogs as a

measure for assuring quality. Various organizations have their own requirements for

certification. The purpose of this is to ensure that the dog as well as the handler work well along

with each other and also that the dog maintains its skills.

The dog is given the certification once it gets all the required training and once it clears all the

tests which are conducted to test its skills. Once it clears all its tests, it is certified and is up for

sale to the handlers who are in need of assistance dogs.
