About
Bamboo poles outside HDB flats tend to be very heavy when laden with clothes.
Heavy bamboo poles are dangerous for the user (falling accidents); as well as for other residents (falling poles).
We need an invention that simplifies the process of bringing clothes in and out of the flat by minimizing weight.

Target Audience
Main target audience
Elderly with weak arms, living alone
Bringing poles in and out of flat is dangerous
Secondary target audience
Domestic helpers, housewives
Extent of the Problem
Tragic story of a maid losing her life in the process of hanging out the laundry
Extent of the Problem
http://smj.sma.org.sg/5003/5003a6.pdf “… Home injuries (67.9 percent) were the most common, followed by road-related injuries (21.2 percent). 85.3 percent of the injuries were due to falls. 49.9 percent of the patients were admitted to hospital.”
Gait/Weakness/Imbalance stands to be the highest percentage.
Our Design
Window
Holder
Pole
Special detachable hangers attached to Steel Wire
How it works
The handle turns the wheels which are riveted to the pole, moving the steel wire in a circular direction. Clothes are hung on special detachable hangers which are snapped onto crimped loops by means of carabinas. This system allows the user to hang out or retrieve clothing one piece by one piece.
*Wheel made bigger for illustration purposes
What is crimping?

Hanger Design
A carabiner will be used to attach the hanger to the crimped loop.
- The crimped loop will keep the hanger from sliding along the wire.
- The carabiner will prevent the hanger from flying away.

Existing Solutions
Retractable Lever System
Why Our Invention?(How it beats the current solutions?)
More effective in minimizing weight
Our pole can remain outside (vs. bringing the pole into the flat), while the elderly bring the clothes in and out piece by piece, thus reducing the stress on their hands.
Safety
No need to bring the pole back into the flat AND as such it minimizes the risk of falling accidents and poles dropping/falling.
Comparison- Ours vs Others
Our Invention Conventional Method
1. Pole remains outside
2. Clothes are taken in and out piece by piece
3. Elderly manage lesser weight when drying clothes
4. Handling individual pieces of clothing require less strength to counter effects of wind
5. Weather proof materials means system is durable and requires minimal maintenance.
6. By using the hanger method, the pole can be shortened by half
1. Pole is taken in and out of the flat
2. Clothes are taken in and out at once
3. The pole laden with clothes can be very heavy
4. Wind makes it even harder to handle entire pole-load of clothing
5. Bamboo poles will corrode over time when exposed to the elements
6. Length of pole adds to the burden of weight
Comparison- Ours vs OthersOur Invention Retractable Lever System
1. Pole remains outside
2. Clothes are taken in and out piece by piece
3. Elderly manage lesser weight when drying clothes
1. Pole is still taken in and out of the flat
2. All the clothes are taken in and out at once
3. The pole laden with clothes can be very heavy
Estimated Price
Below $20
Limitations
Unable to hang heavy blankets and bed sheets
Pole might get dirty when left outside
Wire may expand/contract slightly during hot/cold weather
Slightly costly
Thank you
