Introduction
■ Blue sapphire is a member of the mineral species corundum. The word sapphire when used alone typically refers this blue variety of corundum, other colors such as pink, orange, yellow are termed as fancy sapphires.
■ Blue sapphire is one of the most popular colored stones, it has an extraordinary velvety blue to violetish blue, and sets a standard against which other blue gems are measured.
■ Traditionally, it represents royalty, nobility, truth and faithfulness and has been adorned by royal class for centuries.

Qualities of a fine Blue sapphire
■ The most highly valued sapphires are velvety blue to violetish blue, in medium to medium-dark tones and strong to vivid saturation. The color is caused by trace elements iron and titanium.
■ Kashmir sapphires are regarded as the finest quality sapphires with a velvety lustre and desirable softness and they are very rare.
■ Although sapphires from Kashmir and Burma are regarded as the finest quality ones but stones from Sri lanka display beautiful brilliance and saturation and are preferred in some markets, including Japan.
■ Most fine sapphires over 100 ct. are from Sri lanka.■ Thailand is also a significant source but most of the stones are usually
dark, so they require heat treatment.■ Thailand is also a major cutting, treating and marketing centre for
