The first stage to making a magazine publication is setting up the date in which you are going to publish it which usually takes a day or two, these need to be realistic as it is going to be available for all the public to see.

Page 7: Production Plan

The second stage in sorting out the schedule which is extremely important. In order to proceed successfully, meeting deadlines is the key to success as you do not want to disappoint to public by delaying your release date. Even when faults occur you must have everything by the final deadline. This process usually takes between 2-4 days.

The topics will be involved in the magazine is the next process. The editorial team will come together to discuss and analyzed this, this is important as it is the heart of the magazine and could determine whether it succeeds or fails. When the stories are discussed, budget re-quirement s are analyzed and they have to look into whether the money is available to spend on what these stores require. This stage usually takes between 2 to 4 days.

Deciding the content is probably the most important factor of the magazine as it is the heart and soul. There are two ways in which the content is gathered, the first is in-house writers wring the content for the magazine and the second is out-of-house writers who are asked to work when needed. The graphics and artwork are also generated at this point where pictures are taken and edited with the computer programs necessary.

Next if the company is well enough t have a sub-editor they will, however if not then usually the editor just carries out this role, s(he) is re-sponsible for the roles of:

• Designing the layout of the pages• Making sure there are no spelling mistakes and that grammar and punctuality is used correctly• Making sure that all the artless follow the style of the magazine• Double checking all facts in the stories to see if they are true.

Within publications there is a term called layout staff who organize all of the content on the page. When doing this they use extreme pub-lication programs in order to complete their job. In this stage adverts are also added. This usually takes 1-3 days.

When proof reading the editorial department prints out a hard copy in order to find any mistakes. It is easier to proofread a hard copy, an mistake is spotted much more quickly and can be easily corrected on the DTP file. The team keeps going through the magazine until ev-ery mistake has been corrected. Proof reading can take up to 2 days.

After the proof reading period the magazine is sent to the printers whose job it is to make sure all the desired copies are printed. Pre-press happens just before printing where all the fines and images are tested to see if it all looks right when printed. When this is over the hundreds of thousands of copies are printed. Printing can last for days as large numbers are usually requested.

Page 8: Production Plan

When distributed and the printing company have finished with the printing, they are then packaged and sent to the warehouse. From the warehouse the magazines are sold to the public. Distribution can take up to 6 days depending on factors such as speed of the couriers and the quality of the magazine.

This process for a monthly magazine issue generally takes between two weeks and 3 weeks due to the amount of detail and quality put into making a decent product and constant reviewing of correcting the magazine.
