Introduction

She’s been dreaming about it since she was a little girl. That magical moment when, one day, her prince charming will muster up the courage and pop the question: “Will you marry me?”

There’s a ton of weight put on this one moment. It could mean the difference between a timeless memory that she will cherish forever and an embarrassing event that she’d rather forget.

Go down in her history book as the prince charming that she’s been waiting for. Make it a romantic story to tell your kids one day…and with that said, let’s explore some do’s and don’ts to popping the big question.

The Do’s

Memorable Locations

It’s a classic move, and it will never get tacky. Taking your loved one to the place where you had your first date, where you first met, or on an exotic location that is extra special.

These are all great ideas and it shows that you’re paying attention and always have been. In life, we are attracted to things that come around full circle, be it in stories, music, or in love.

The Do’s

Practice, Practice, Practice

Sure, being nervous can be endearing and cute…but to an extent. The moment you begin stuttering more than you’re actually talking the ‘moment’ gets lost.

Also, when you’re proposing you want your bride to be to feel as though you are confident in making such a big commitment. Your nervous stuttering may not necessarily give her that idea!

The Do’s

Meet the Parents

Traditional or not, if you’re asking the lady of your dreams to marry you that means that you’re asking to become a member of her family and vice versa.

For harmony’s sake, it’s always best to understand what you’re marrying into and it’s nice to give your in-laws-to-be a glimpse of what the family their lovely daughter is becoming a part of.

Meet the parents, if even for obvious reasons. Getting the blessings is always a plus!

The Don’ts

Asking Empty Handed

This is rule #1. If you’re going to ask for your lover’s hand in marriage be sure that you have a ring to put on her hand. She’s been waiting for this her whole life, don’t take the chance of ruining it by not having the universal symbol of commitment ready to present to her.

The Don’ts

Large Audience

To many people, there’s nothing worse than public embarrassment. Having something like a marriage proposal turn into a public spectacle can put the wrong kind of pressure on a person. Just search Youtube for “Failed proposals”!

Unless, it’s something that you know that she’s into, rule of thumb should be to keep it quaint. Focus on you and your significant other, not on what everyone else thinks.

The Don’ts

Telling Too Many People About Your Plan

Yes, we all have those people that we can trust to keep a secret. However, something like a marriage proposal is simply way too tempting to not tell anyone else…and if word gets out…count out surprising your bride-to-be with a well planned proposal. Though, it’ll still be nice, we’re sure…

The Don’ts

Hiding the ring in Food

It may have worked in the movies or on television, but there’s been many cases when this romantic gesture ends up doing more harm than good. There was the case of the fiancé-to-be who wound up swallowing her ring during dessert, or the one that chipped her tooth on a ring hidden in her meal…Don’t let these mishaps come your way, keep the ring in its box and keep it out of the food.
