What is Educational Technology?
To understand the meaning of Educational Technology, it would be good to begin with the meaning of Technology. The word " Technology " comes from the greek word techne which means craft or art. Based on the etymology of the word " Technology ", the term educational Technology, therefore, refers to the art or craft of responding to our educational needs.
Educational Technology is the development, application and evaluation of systems, techniques and aids to improve the process of human learning.Educational Technology is a systematic way of designing, implementing and evaluating the total learning and teaching in terms of specific objectives based on research in human learning and communication; and employing a combination of human and non-human resources to bring about more effective instructions.
It is the application of scientific findings in our method, process or procedure of working in the field of education in order to affect learning.

There are lots of definition of Educational Technology but for me, Educational technology is a innovative way of getting hold of knowledge through the use of educational medium for the betterment of our learning and improve our educational standards. It paved the way to a world of modern and pioneering instruments of acquiring knowledge and skills. It can simplify and make our lives more easier and faster. Educational technology refers to all the processes and systems of learning that can satisfy our needs and can develop our human capabilities to learn by using it in our daily lives.
TECHNOLOGY: Boon or Bane?
It is bane when…
Because of our cellular phones, we spend most of our time in the classroom or in the workplace texting
The tv makes the learner a mere spectator not an active participant in the drama of life.
The learner has indiscriminating mind on images emerging on televisions and computers that represent modernity and progress.
A teacher may misuse educational televisions in a class when he or she lets these technologies replace him or her just to kill time.
We use, overuse and abuse tv or film viewing as a strategy to kill time
We spend more time in using cellphones and computers than doing more important and valuable things in studies and works.
Technologies become detriment to learning and development when not used properly.
When technology is misused it could destroy relationships.
The learner gets glued to his computer for computer-assisted instruction unmindful of the world and so fails to develop the ability to relate to others
We make use of the Internet to do character assassination of people whom we hardly like
It is boon when…
Cellphones and webcams: makes us closer to someone who is miles away from us.
With technology, there is a lot that a man can do which we could not do then..
When we use technology properly and in moderate way in researching information for our projects, assignments, etc.
In teaching, multimedia in the classroom makes the teaching-learning process a novel, simulating, exciting and engaging one.
When we use cell phones to stay in contact with our friends and family anywhere that we are. It is how students communicate problems and emergencies with their parents when they are at school as well.
We use Technology to make our tasks easier and get through in less time.
SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO TEACHING
The systems approach views the entire educational program as a system of closely interrelated parts. It is an orchestrated learning pattern with all parts harmoniously integrated into the whole: the school, the teacher, the students, the objectives, the media, the materials, and assessment tools and procedures. Such an approach integrates the older, more familiar methods and tools of instruction with the new ones such as the computer.
Systematized InstructionDefine Objectives
Instruction begins with the definition of instructional objectives that consider the students' needs, interests and readiness.
Systematized InstructionChoose appropriate methods
On the basis of these objectives the teacher selects the appropriate teaching methods to be utilized.
Systematized InstructionChoose appropriate
experiences
In turn, based on the teaching method selected, the appropriate learning experiences an appropriate materials, equipment and facilities will also be selected
Select materials, equipment and facilities
Systematized Instruction
The use of learning materials, equipment and facilities necessities assigning the personnel to assist the teacher.
Systematized InstructionAssign personal roles
Defining the role of any personnel involved in the preparation, setting and returning of this learning resources would also help in the learning process.
Implement the instruction
Systematized Instruction
With the instructional objectives in mind, the teacher implements planned instructions with the use of the selective teaching method, learning activities, and learning materials with the help of other personnel whose role has been defined by the teacher.
Systematized InstructionEvaluate outcomes After instructions,
teacher evaluates the outcome of instruction. From the evaluation results, teacher comes to know if
the instructional objective was attained.
Systematized Instruction Refine the processIf the instructional objective was attained, teacher proceeds to the next lesson going
through the same cycle once more. If instructional objectives was not attained , then
teacher diagnoses was not learned and finds out why it was not learned in order to introduced a
remedial measure for improved student performance and attainment of instructional
objectives.
The Roles of Educational Technology
in Learning
•Technology as tools to support knowledge construction
1. For presenting learners’ ideas, understandings and beliefs
2. For producing organized, multimedia knowledge bases for learners
• Technology as information vehicles for exploring knowledge to support learning-by-constructing:
1. For accessing needed information
2. For comparing perspectives, beliefs and world views
•Technology as a social medium to support learning by conversing
1.For collaborating with others
2.For discussing, arguing, and building consensus among members of the community
3.For supporting discourse among knowledge building communities
•Technology as context to support learning by doing
1. for representing and simulating meaningful real-world problems, situations and contexts
2.for representing beliefs, perspectives, arguments, and stories of others
3.For defining safe, controllable problem space for student thinking
•Technology as intellectual partner
1.For helping learners to articulate and represent what they know
2.For reflecting on what they have learned and how they come to know it
3.For supporting learners’ internal negotiations and meaning making
4.For constructing personal representations of meaning for supporting mindful thinking
ROLES OF TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION
Today’s generation of students are growing up in a digital world. Using digital devices is a huge part of their everyday experience out of school. Through Google they have access to a wide wealth of digital information, content and resources.
With all of this so intrinsic to their “outside school “ experience, the challenge for the teaching profession is how to harness all this for learning within the classroom and at home. This generation of digital natives has much lower need for libraries of physical content for example, the traditional resource used by students half a generation ago. Learning styles are changing and teachers need to adapt their teaching styles accordingly.
CONE OF EXPERIENCE
The cone of experience is a visual model, a pictorial device that presents bands of experience arranged according to degree of abstraction and not degree of difficulty. The further you go from the bottom of the cone, the more abstract the experience becomes.
Direct purposeful experiences
these are first hand experiences which serves as the foundation of our learning. We build up our reservoir of meaningful information and ideas through seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and smelling. In the context of teaching – learning process, it is learning by doing. If I want my student to learn how to focus on a compound light microscope, I will let him focus one, of course, after I showed him how.
Contrived experience in here, we make use of a representative models or mock – ups of reality for practical reasons and so that we can make the real -life accessible to the students’ perceptions and understanding. For instance a mock – up of Apollo, the capsule for the exploration of the moon, enabled the North American Aviation Co. to study the problem of lunar flight.
Dramatized experiences
by dramatization, we can participate in a reconstructed experience, even though the original the original event is far removed from us in time. We relieve the outbreak of the Philippine revolution by acting out the role of characters in the drama.
Demonstrationsit is a visualized explanation of an important fact, idea or process by the use of photographs, drawings, films, displays or guided motions. It is showing how things are done. A teacher in Physical Education shows the class how to dance tango.
Study tripsthese are excursions, educational trips, and visits conducted to observe an event that is unavailable within the classroom.
Exhibitsthese are displays to be seen by spectators. They may consists of working models arranged meaningfully or photographs with modes, charts, posters. Sometimes exhibits are “ for your eyes only” . there are some exhibits however, that include sensory experiences where spectators are allowed to touch or manipulate models displayed.
Televisions and motion pictures
televisions and motions pictures can reconstruct the reality of the past so effectively that we are made to feel we are there. The unique value of the messages communicated by fil and television lies in their feeling of realism, their emphasis on persons and personality, their organized presentation, and their ability to select, dramatized, highlight, and clarify.
Still pictures, recordings, radio
these are visual and auditory devices which may be used by an individual or a group. Still pictures lack the sound and motion of a sound film. The radio broadcast of an actual event may often be Liked to a televise broadcast minus its visual dimension.
Visual symbols these are no longer realistic reproduction of physical things for these are highly abstract representations. Examples are charts, graphs, maps, and diagrams.
Verbal symbolsthey are not like the objects or ideas for which they stand. They usually do not contain visual clues to their meaning. Written words fall under this category. It may be a word for a concrete object (book), an idea (freedom of speech), a scientific principle ( the principle of balance), a formula (e=mc2).
CONCEPTUAL MODEL
OF LEARNING
There exist a number of models and theories about learning that is ideal in achieving instructional goals though preferred application of Educational Technology.
Meaningful learningDiscovery learning Generating learningConstructivism
MEANINGFUL LEARNING
If the traditional learning environment gives stress to rote learning and simple memorization, meaningful learning gives focus to new experience that departs from learning of sequence of words but gives attention to meaning.
DISCOVERY LEARNINGStudents perform task to uncover what is to be learned. New ideas and new decision are generated in learning process, regardless of the need to move on and depart from the structured lesson previously set.
GENERATING LEARNINGThis is viewed as different from the simple process of storing information. Motivation and responsibility are crucial to this domain of learning. This gives emphasis to what can be done with the pieces of information not only on access to them.
CONSTRUCTIVISMLearning consist in what a person can actively assemble for himself and not what he can just ask from someone else.
Role of learning is to help the individual live to his personal world.
LEARNING THROUGH EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY 2
Which is putting together technology into teaching and learning so that these will become one in learner’s education. To specify- focused on introducing, reinforcing, supplementing, and extending the knowledge and skills to learners so that they can become exemplary users of educational technology.
Educational technology 2 will involve a deeper understanding of the computer as well as hands-on –application of computer skills. To infuse technology in the student-teacher training, helping learners to adapt and meet rapid and continuing technology changes in information and communication technology environment.
REFLECTIONEducational Technology 2 as opposed to educational technology 1, is more on hands- on activities and more enjoyable and fun. Through this subject, I have experienced a lot which is I had not experienced in the previous Educational Technology 1. i learned creating my own account in GMAIL, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Our teacher let us experience all these. She teaches us to be aware with the use of computer software including the Microsoft, Powerpoint and micro excel. As a future teacher, we are given a chance to become an effective teacher someday. We are being taught for a better teaching which is also helpful for both teacher and students.
Nor – Shiela M. Hassan
REFLECTION Educational Technology is more on a hands- on experience, I learned so much that will help to enhance my skills using technologies and I learned how to explore different cites that can be the source of informations. Experiences that I gain on those hands- on activities is such a big help to me that leads my knowledge into bigger room of learnings.
