We are constantly around some kind of
technology or another; nearly everyone has a
mobile phone or communication device,
there’s new gadgets on the market everyday
and the world of technology advances a little
every single day. Younger generations have
been brought up in a world that revolves
around this newly discovered technology; you
are rarely ever few steps away from a piece
of gadgety hi tech equipment.
There’s advantages and disadvantages to this technology, and it affects
the magazine industry hugely, both giving it pros and cons.
Advantages Disadvantages
•A lot of people now have technology and so
will be interested if a magazine promotes
itself online.
•Not everyone has a piece of hi technology and
may resent the magazine being online.
•Most people’s technology has the capability
to connect to the Internet, so it would be
beneficial to create an online version.
•Having an online version can be risky; the
internet is full of viruses and is liable to break
down.
•People like updates and ‘fresh’ news so will
be able to get it faster via the web.
•Some people prefer the traditional way of
getting a tangible copy rather than reading
from a screen.
•Some people like the Modern Era and
prefer reading via a phone rather than a
magazine.
•What you read may not necessarily be true
whereas in a publication it most likely will be.
•Can be money efficient creating a website
rather than splashing out money on
publishing.
•Some people like to be able to read and finish
the magazine – the web is infinite.
•Advertisement applications may well raise. •The magazines will be published without fail –
some websites get neglected and therefore
remain un-updated.
•It can ‘bring people together’ •It is healthier to read a magazine/newspaper
than to sit glued to a computer screen.
Although there are disadvantages for using New Media, I think including it into my magazine would be beneficial because not only does it ‘expand’ the MM empire, but it would also appeal hugely to my target audience, teenagers and young adults, who are the most likely to be using this technology, as typical characteristics of this age group is that they are meant to be very up and knowledgeable about technology and ‘whiz’ geniuses, as well as being the generation that are ‘glued’ to their pieces of technologies. This age group are also the most likely one to be utilizing social networking sites so I plan to ‘create’ some accounts for the social networking sites YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
