Bridget Jones DiaryBridget Jones Diary is based on a book about a woman in her 30’s, Bridget Jones played by Renee Zellwger, living in london who is trying to figure out her life including her love life where she is torn between her boss, daniel cleaver played by Hugh Grant, and a human rights lawyer who is a friend of the family, Mark Darcy played by Colin Firth. This film belongs to the Romcom genre of film and was that successful that it has a sequel named ‘Bridget Jones Diary-The Edge Of Reason’ and is set to have a 3rd installment. Bridget keeps a diary of her life in which she attempts to find the man of her dreams and live happily ever after as well as trying to loose weight And give up smoking. She portrays a very ordinary woman, Having to deal with her couple friends asking about her love Life and embarressing moments at work and in her social lifeWhich is appealing to the target audience making this film soSuccessful.

Love ActuallyLove Actually is based on the love life of 8 different characters and we follow each of their story all in the month leading up to Christmas. This includes a dad, played by Liam Neeson, trying to help his son pluck up the courage to tell a girl that he likes her, Hugh Grant plays the prime minister who has fallen in love with a maid, played by Martine Mcutchen, and also feature the like of Keira Knightly and Colin Firth.

I think that reason this film was so successful was because of the cast that was chosen to feature in the film. As this film also belongs to the RomCom genre having stars such as Hugh Grant and Colin Firth in the film meant that the target audience are likely to go and watch this film as these as are well known stars of this particular genre.

About A BoyAbout A Boy is based on the life of man who lives a bacherlor lifestyle, played by Hugh Grant, who enjoys dating many different women and lives of the royalities of his dads famous christmas song. In his quest to meet some more women he ends up meeting a young boy who doesn’t have a very good life as he gets bullied at school and doesn’t have many friends, as he takes the boy under his wing he makes him realise that he actually wants to settle down and have a family and we watch how he attempts to change his life.

Again the reason I think that this film is successful is because it feature Hugh Grant who is appealing to the target audience as this film could be classed as a RomCom. The audience get to see how the guy who cares about his appearance and clothes and doesn’t really do much with his life become a sort of father figure to a young boy and even gets himself into embaressing situations to help him out before the boy then helps him to find a woman to settle down with.

RomCom GenreI like to watch films that belong to the RomCom genre (Romantic Comedy) as I find the way the exagerate to sitiuations that happens to everyone in their own lives amusing and entertaining. I think that they are usually films that make you feel cheery and content as they use certain situations from everyday life such as people struggling to figuare out what they want to achieve in life and their love life and exaggerate it to show the funny side to it all and gives off a ‘not to worry’ impressive to the audience.

However I personally chose these kinds of film based on who stars in it, for example I am likely to go and see a new film if it features someone such as Hugh Grant as he anchors down what kind of film it will be as he appears in most of my favourite films.

Most films in the ROMCOM genre share similar connotations and storylines of boy meets girl, at first they don’t like each other, they fall in love and then finally end up together.

Reception Theory Reception theory is about how an audience reacts to a film based upon their age, gender, ethnicity, social class. For example, ‘Need For Speed’ appeals to Young men between the ages of 16 and 35. With this film it doesn’t matter about social class as much as other films would because it appeals to a wide range of men, for those who aspire to have them cars as well as people who already do.

Intertextuality

There is not much intertextuality in this particular film genre even though most of the films have a similar storyline it doesn’t often use intertexuality to appeal to its target audience and tends to use star theory as a away appealing to their target audince and anchoring down what genre the film belongs to.

Media LiteracyThere are a lot of different ways that you can find out about new movies set to be realesed. Advertising is a main way that movies get across. This includes adverts on TV, Billboards, magazines, radio and newspapers.

Interviews are also a promotion that actors often use to talk about the film they have recently starred in which will appeal to the target audience, for example they will go around the world and appear on chat shows.

Social networking websites such as facebook and Twiiter are a big way to advertise with actors being able to promote their new film directly to their fans.

Other websites like Youtube are a good way to promote a new film, with adverts on their home screen and before a video plays. This is a good way to advertise to the films target audience.

Active Spectatorship

The active spectatorship theory suggests that each viewer is different and many people in the audience will question the film and react to it in different ways to others, finding different meanings behind a film.Active spectatorship also relates to the idea of ‘fandom’. This is where the audience for a particularfilm adopts it as their own for example fans of the twilight films name themselves as ‘Twi-hards.’
