Computer Graphic Technology
Motion capture (mocap) : Technology of recording movement and translating that movement onto a digital model. There are some exemples :
The Polar ExpressBeowulfKing Kong!!
Uncanny valley : Essay of the japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori. It says that after some limits, when such characters approach! realistic similarity to humans, they become eerie, frightening, repulsive until another limit.
Overcoming all uncanny effects
Motion Largely the problem(uncanny valley) of realistic human motion was solved with mocap in the end of 1990s.
What was left?EyesFacial Performance
Mova Contour solved these two problems with a new technology called "Contour"(scanning the actor), there are some exemples of movies where it has been used :
Benjamin Button (reverse-aging facial effects)The Hulk (transformation of Edward Norton to the Hulk)
What can be done with this technology?
Possibility of creating realistic computer generated actors by capturing the facial movements of real actors.
It will let fillmakers transform the apperance of actors in computer, raising the possibility of a new form of digital video in which the viewer can control the point of view.
CGI decrease the total cost of the movie :
Today to produce a traditional film, it cost around $200 million do produce what companies hope will be a hit.!
To produce a CGI movie with the same hit potential the cost is around $60 million dollars.
Where does this technology go?
Mr.Perlman, the owner of the Mova Contour, said once : "Sometime in the next year or so, digital artists will start crossing that uncanny valley, and I doubt they`ll ever look back." This will certainly influence the real actors economicly.
Since the speed for processing information is constantly increasing and the cost decreasing, it will be possible to make more advanced animated movies.!
Software development is also a key to develop more realistic-looking humans. Movie studios that are not depending on established actors will be able to act more flexible
Conclusion
No upside down pressure
Consumers gained more power
They forced the industry to change
