Monuments A structure and a symbol. For as long as history can remember, monuments have stood as an expression of pride, loss, love and to commemorate people of great importance. While a monument can technically be anything from a famous man made structure, to a naturally occurring formation such as a canyon or cave, the monuments to which people flock are those built by people to honour, celebrate, grieve for and in some cases even enshrine a loved one or a person who played a great role in the cultural and social society of that time. In fact the very origin of the word monument is from the Latin word meaning ‘to remind’. It is no wonder that monuments are so revered and given such a place of importance not only in daily lives but also in history. Great monuments such as the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal etc have been constructed thousands of years ago by great men. Their endurance through time only serves to increase the awe associated with them. They stand for the beliefs, faith, strength and thoughts of that time. They serve as a symbol of their nations, putting them on the world map. Monuments are also built for a number of reasons, some more modern ones to be used as landmarks with distinctive features. Some were built for religious purposes and were intended to serve their respective religions as places of prayer. Monuments – A structure and a symbol.

For as long as history can remember, monuments have stood as an expression of pride, loss,

love and to commemorate people of great importance. While a monument can technically be

anything from a famous man made structure, to a naturally occurring formation such as a

canyon or cave, the monuments to which people flock are those built by people to honour,

celebrate, grieve for and in some cases even enshrine a loved one or a person who played a

great role in the cultural and social society of that time. In fact the very origin of the word

monument is from the Latin word meaning ‘to remind’. It is no wonder that monuments are

so revered and given such a place of importance not only in daily lives but also in history.

Great monuments such as the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal etc have

been constructed thousands of years ago by great men. Their endurance through time only

serves to increase the awe associated with them. They stand for the beliefs, faith, strength and

thoughts of that time. They serve as a symbol of their nations, putting them on the world map.

Monuments are also built for a number of reasons, some more modern ones to be used as

landmarks with distinctive features. Some were built for religious purposes and were

intended to serve their respective religions as places of prayer. Others were built as

extravagant homes of rich and successful rulers who wanted to wave their success to the

world. There are also those monuments that are built to honour the departed. These are often

intricate and boast of great workmanship. Many of the more famously known monuments are

actually tombs or built to remember the dead. Various cenotaphs and war memorials are part

of this category.

Although built with just stone tiles, the structure itself tells a story that makes it a symbol of

greatness. For instance, the Taj Mahal is declared to be a symbol of love because the Moghul

Emperor Shah Jahan was so overcome with grief over the loss of his wife, that he built her

the most extravagant tomb for her to rest in as a testament to his undying love. Even today

lovers from all over the world flock to this site to visit a place that will forever be associated

with the strong emotion that was poured into it when it was being constructed thousands of

years ago.
