ANTONIO CARRARO - THE TRACTOR PEOPLE

Very special envelopes often arrive here at Antonio Carraro in
Campodarsego, Padova. They contain drawings from children in
which the unmistakably red tractors with their big black wheels are
driven by heroic dads. This is a sign, all being a small one, that this
company is more than just a factory and that these tractors are not
just tractors. The fact is that the tractor, in a child’s imagination as
well as in an adult’s, represents a mythical vehicle; it overcomes
every obstacle and difficulty, it carries out diverse and difficult tasks,
it tames nature into being “good” and “friendly”. A legend that
transcends reality, in which the ring of four horses and the flaming
red bodywork of Antonio Carraro’s tractors, past and present, have a
leading role.
In the wake of a great Italian tradition.
A Monument to the Power Hammer
The Giovanni Carraro monument, conceived byAntonio Carraro is made up of three elements:the bust of Giovanni Carraro, in bronze byAugusto Murer (the only Italian sculptor at theHermitage Museum in St Petersberg), thepower hammer belonging to Giovanni Carraroand a pond with running water, symbol of lifebut also a fundamental element for thecooling of metal worked by the blacksmith.Lined up on a strip of marble there is thebust, the water and the hammer. Engraved onit is a famous quote form The Iliad by Homer:“”Better is the blacksmith’s art than hisstrength….” Almost a desire to raise theperception of the blacksmith’s work, considered mainly physical, to a creative andintellectual expression. With the invention of the power hammer, withits rotating weights activated by a harnessedhorse moving around the power hammer itself,it was possible to “mass” produce many steelobjects: agricultural equipment, harnesses, gates, carts, blades. At the beginning of the20s Giovanni Carraro, with the introduction ofthe torque force in his workshop was able tomodify, his father, Giuseppe’s power hammerto be operated by an electrical engine.

A Tale to Tell.
“Carraro” means “carriage-maker” or ratherthose, in Veneto in the 16th century whorealised the importance of this particularpiece of technology in a world dominated byagriculture. Over a period of four centuriesone might think that the Carraro familywould have changed craft, as often happensin families. But instead, in 1910 the youngGiovanni Carraro not only follows in thefootsteps of his ancestors, but also goes onto invent a multifunctional, farming vehiclewith great future promise.Forward thinking, design and technologicalinnovation, awareness of end-user needs areall part of this family’s genetic make-up.That’s how a small, family business becamea great name and an important company.

Improving the quality of work and life
In this day and age a company’s leadership is derived, even before the
production lines, from its R&D department. And it is like this also for
Antonio Carraro, with the addition of another important feature: the
company’s R&D (Research and Development), which is not a recent
development but rather, dates back to the seventies. It represents a
full-scale research project into multifunctionality and ergonomics, with
an important mission: improving the end-user’s quality of life and work
in a whole host of environmental and operational contexts. A goal that
Antonio Carraro has reached through tried and tested, winning
innovations.

Antonio Carraro’s research and developmentcarried out by the R&D follows the strictprinciple of providing new product-solutions. TheErgit Series is an example of the application ofthis exact principle. The unique super-low profileof these compact tractors was born from aspecific market need: to allow the tractor to passunder bushy plantations without creatingproblems for the operator or damaging thebodywork of the tractor itself, especially oninaccessible ground and amongst narrow-rowcrops. For this same reason, the models from theErgit Series are fitted with an overhung engineand ACTIO i.e. full chassis with oscillation. Thelatter has a central articulated joint, which has alongitudinal oscillation of 15°; in this way it ispossible to operate on extremely steep slopes andcope with difficult obstacles withoutcompromising comfort and safety while exploitingthe engine’s power to the absolute limit. Anotherfeature developed by Antonio Carraro’s R&D isthe SLP pressurised cab (Super Low Profile)whose design and comfort is comparable to thatof a car. It was designed to safeguard the healthof the operator but still allowing it to get inspaces that remain inaccessible for tractors withtraditional cabs.

…in the city
What have the following all got in common? Anorchard in Spain, a golf course in the USA, apark in a big German city, a forest in Norway or avineyard in New Zealand. Nothing, apart from thepresence of an Antonio Carraro tractor. TheCampodarsego company’s fundamentalconcept -innovation, versatility, globaldifferentiation- translates into a global presenceon International markets, through not only theexperience and professionalism of its Distributorsand Dealers but also directly with itssubsidiaries. From “Antonio Carraro Iberica” forSpain and Portugal, which have always beenconsidered as “domestic” markets due to theirsimilarity to our own climate and crops, to“Antonio Carraro America” in the USA, where thetractors with the “four horses” have beenimported and appreciated for some time now asfar away as Australia and the Pacific withAntonio Carraro Oceania” and then in Northern,Central and Eastern Europe, the Mediterraneancountries... in fact all over the world, due to itsinnovation in design and technology, andconstant presence with its quality and service,Antonio Carraro has the image of being a specialbrand that doesn’t fade in value over time.

Versatility and Reversibility Are OurOverriding Concerns.
From 1910 with the first multifunctional tractor to the beginning of the
third millennium, there is one thread that runs through Antonio Carraro’s
projects: versatility. The ability to quickly adapt to ever-changing needs
represents the intuition which, along with the colour red and the ring of
four horses, has become the company’s signature and has led it to
International success. From specialised agriculture to golf courses, from
forests to historical city centres, each end-user can choose his own
personal model with a specific power and implement combination that
suits the terrain and activity that the tractor has to deal with. All this with
a simple yet sophisticated style, ergonomic and efficient, innovative and
reliable is what we have come to call the Antonio Carraro style.
Man at the Centreof Innovation
Just ten seconds see the inversion of thedrive direction. Reversibility is anothersalient feature of Antonio Carraro’sproduction philosophy that is symbolisedby the “reversible” logo of the ring of fourhorses itself. This characteristic is takento extremes of perfection and simplicity.Reversing the seat and control position injust one singular move means that thephysical effort and time wastage whencarrying out the same operation withtraditional tractors can be avoided.Reversibility (RGS™) responds to a veryspecific ergonomic need; thanks to thisthe operator can always remain in acomfortable position, that is correct andsafe, while he works, remaining constantlyin control of the tractor. This concept is fundamental to everyAntonio Carraro solution.

SAT CentreAssistance, Training, documentation
If Antonio Carraro is in first position on the world stage for compact tractors, it is because its after salesservice along with its product innovation is at the top of its list of values. Being a company withgrowing success on the ultra-competitive markets in America and Australia and which has consideredEurope as the domestic market for some time now, It couldn’t fail to be otherwise. It is for this reasonthat the Centre for Technical Assistance (SAT) together with the R&D and the new production lines hasbecome the hub of the organisation. It is not just a service centre but a real meeting of thetechnological needs of the operators with Antonio Carraro technology; this idea also comes in the formof regular courses run for the Assistance Network technicians and the active and direct presence ofTechnical Inspectors in the field, wherever in the world Antonio Carraro tractors are bought and used.
