Period One:

Reading &Speaking: * Warming –up: Questions:1) Describe one of your favorite teachers in a

few words from their characters and teaching styles.

2)What should a good teacher be like?

I. Pre-reading activities:A. Questions: Which of the following statements do you agree with?

1. All good teachers talk a lot.2. I think teachers need to be strict. 3. I like teachers who are amusing and can laugh with their students.

4. The most popular teachers are always very kind. 5. Good teachers always return homework quickly. 6. You should be able to ask your teacher questions at any time during a lesson.

B. First impressions:Look at the Pictures of Mrs Li ,Mrs Chen and Mr Wu. What are your first impressions of the three teachers?

II. While-reading activities:A)Questions: 1. Who is the most popular teacher?2. Who is the kindest teacher?3. Which teacher are students most afraid of? 4. Which teachers explain things clearly?

B) Work in pairs. Read My new teachers again. Which teacher would you like to have? Explain why.

III. Post-reading activities: A) Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions. 1. Do you prefer serious or funny teachers? Why ? 2. Do you think teachers should help students outside school if necessary ?

3. How much homework do you think teachers should set ?

4. What can teachers do to make their lessons really interesting ?

Work in groups . Write ten criteria for a good teacher. Explain why you think these things are important. Example: A good teacher enjoys teaching. This is important because students usually enjoy a lesson if their teacher enjoys his work.

C)Some criteria for a good teacher:

kind, patient, amusing,lively, honest, strict, serious, energetic, intelligent, wise, loyal, organized , polite, easy-going,

warm-hearted, popular, enjoy teaching, love students, play and laugh with students, explain things clearly, equal to students, make lessons interesting and lively, have discipline in the class…

IV. Task:

1. Describe one of your favourite teachers.2. Search on the internet to find if the criteria for a good teacher are different between western countries and our country.
