What I’ve Learned From My Travels Around the World

SIDDARTH S [email protected]

The Desire & The Opportunity

Knowing my deep love of travel, my friends gifted me a map, shown in the picture above so that I could mark all the different places in the world that I’d already travelled to. In the last few years, I’ve been able to mark a few of the “X’s” on the map due to my global travels for Hero MotoCorp.

I have had the opportunity to visit many different countries and to work with diverse international teams. Along the way, I’ve learned and experienced so much – such as the business customs that are unique to each country as well their rich cultural heritages.

South KoreaIncheon, March 2015

One of my first trips with Hero was to visit South Korea to evaluate new technologies for implementation in Hero’s future projects.

Their cuisine is diverse and can be extremely spicy! Bibimbap, a rice dish, is a must try. Additionally, I learnt how to use chopsticks to eat.

Korea has a gift-giving business culture. If you value someone's business relationship, it is helpful to indicate that through giving a gift in any business meeting. I was given a personalized/registered seal called Dojang with my name Siddarth. These seals act as their signatures in business transactions.

GermanyFrankfurt, Jul’15

I learned that Germans value individualism. If you show them that you planned and prepared well for a project and that there are no surprises to be expected, they highly respect that and value it.

I fell in love with the beautiful town of Seligenstadt and the architectural styles of Altstadt (town centre) of Frankfurt. I tried their Flammkuchen (Flame cake) and it was delicious!

I subsequently visited Germany to conduct trials for a new technology implementation and to discuss the project management plan with the vendor for the equipment installation at Hero.

ColombiaCali, August’15

During my time there, I tried immersing myself into their culture and also started learning Spanish. Colombians enjoy working with you more if you are interested in their culture, and they highly value personal relationships.

I tried salsa dancing while there and thoroughly enjoyed it! And the coffee there is some of the best I’ve ever had – a definite must try!

I was appointed by Hero management to lead the installation of surface coating machinery at Hero MotoCorp’s first international manufacturing facility in Cali, Colombia.

MIT SLOAN

My experiences over the last few year have enriched me as I’ve traveled around the world working with Hero’s internationally diverse teams.

At MIT Sloan, in which students are coming from over 50 countries to create a diverse and collaborative community, learning and growing with

them would be the highlight of my experience there. I also hope to share my experiences with my classmates and to further our travels

around the world together.

I look forward to being a part of the MIT community

THANK YOU
