CASE BASED LEARNING • A Case is a description of a situation being faced by an
organisation.
•STEPS OF CASE ANALYSIS• Understanding the situation• Diagnosing the problems• Generating alternative solutions• Predicting outcomes of those different solutions• Evaluating alternatives• Deciding what is the best alternative• Communicating the results
Benefits
•What to look for in a case study• Who are the players?• What are the issues?• Are there competing interpretations of what is the
issue?• No one solution (that is an exercise)• Cases have multiple solutions and interpretations
How do we analyse cases?
•Development of :Analytical skills, Application skills, Creative skills, Communication skills, Social skills and Self analysis
Group Presentation•PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
• 35-45 minutes length (including class discussion)• 1000 word paper fully referenced handed in on the day• Shared mark for the group
•CRITERION FOR PRESENTATION• Synopsis of case • Identification of ethical issue (what bothers me?)• Overview of appropriate theoretical frameworks• Application of frameworks to case• Possible courses of action (how could issues be
resolved)• Conclusion (opinion as to best course of action)

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS ETHICS AND THE NATURE OF CAPITALISM
CAPITALISM
• A capitalist system is one in which the greater part of the means of production are in private hands (Manufacturing, Transport, Banking, Insurance, Mining, Telecommunications, Media)
• The state is left to control: Health, Education, Welfare, Defence
• In a socialist system there is public ownership and control of the means of production and distribution
• Centralised planning rather than individual decision characterises the socialist system
