  • 1. Materials in ConstructionMs. Ali Introduction to Construction

2. AIM:How do we identify and classifyconstruction materials? 3. Learning Objectives: At the endof this lesson SWBAT:Identify different physical properties ofconstruction materials.Compare and contrast the difference betweenferrous and nonferrous materials.Describe Primary and Secondary processing. 4. NYS Standards: ContentStandard(s): Mathematics, Science, and Technology.Standard 1: Students will use mathematical analysis, scientific inquiry, and engineering design, asappropriate, to pose questions, seek answers, anddevelop solutions.Standard 2: Students will access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies. 5. Do Now: In your notebooks, write down threematerials that was used in the constructionof this room. 6. What is the purpose ofconstruction materials? Every construction project is meant tofulfill a specific purpose, in order for thatpurpose to be fulfilled, there must be materials. 7. Choosing Materials:Choosing:ClassificationBest fitPerformanceMaintenance 8. Classification:Knowing how materials are classified will giveyou better knowledge and understanding ofhow they should be used.Materials can be classified into: Solids Liquids Gas 9. Solids: The most common construction materials are solids.Solids can be classified into 4 groups:1. Polymers2. Metals3. Ceramics4. Composites 10. Polymers:Two or more molecules combining through a chemicalreaction create polymers. There are two types ofpolymers, natural and synthetic.Natural Polymers: wood, plants, starch, proteinSynthetic Polymers: Plastic, nylon, polyesterPlastics: Widely used Inexpensive 11. Matals:Metals are classified into two types: ferrous andnonferrous.Ferrous: Containing a large amount of iron.( e.g.Steel)Nonferrous: Containing little to no iron. (e.g. tin, coppers, aluminum) 12. Ceramics:Ceramics are a great construction material because theyare formable and not greatly affected by chemicals, weatheror heat. (glass, stone, tile)AbundantAre made from silicatesInorganic with crystalline structureUnaffected by heat, weather or chemicalsInsulatorsInexpensive (raw material)Comprise many construction materials 13. Composites:Mixture of two or more materials bonded byadhesiveCan be made of any combination of natural andsynthetic materialsSynthetic (finished product)Improve qualityReplacement for natural materialsExamples of composites: particleboard, plywood, fiberboard. 14. ProcessingPrimary Processing:Processing of raw materials into standard sizes(consistency).Obtained by harvesting, mining, and drilling.Secondary Processing: Converting raw materials into usable industrial materials.Lumber, nails, pipes and fuel oils. 15. Summary:1. What considerations should we have when selecting construction materials?2. What is the difference between Primary and secondary Processing?3. Compare and contrast Ferrous and Nonferrous materials. 16. Homework: Due: Tomorrow!1. Finish your crossword puzzles.2. Finish up your FlickR assignments!
