DESCRIPTION
Mango Murphy, Project Director Moreton Bay Rail Link, Department of Transport and Main Roads delivered this presentation at the 2013 QLD Transport Infrastructure conference. Delivering "better infrastructure and planning" is key to the State Government’s plan of a four pillar economy to get "Queensland back on track". As transport takes a leading role in strengthening the Queensland economy, there has never been a better time to review the transport projects and policy promoting the State's future productivity and prosperity. Moreton Bay Rail Link
Objectives of koala monitoring and tagging program
• Protect koalas from harm during vegetation clearing and construction works.
• Inform rail design w.r.t. barrier crossings, important habitat etc.
• “Offset” impacts by:
- Managing koala health – disease treatment.
- Chlamydia vaccine – first field trial.
15
Moreton Bay Rail Link
• Capture all koalas in koala search areas
(program started 25/3/13 – over 90 koalas captured)
• Perform veterinary examination. • Radio-tag. • Telemetric monitoring:
- Conventional radio-telemetry. - Remote monitoring using bio-
telemetry tags.

Koala update
• Updated GIS showing home ranges and interaction with the rail corridor.
• Also shows direction of movement and level of activity over time.
• Informing fauna underpass location.
21
Moreton Bay Rail Link
• Some interesting behaviour – koalas crossing the Pine River and Hays inlet (apparently swimming)

Moreton Bay Rail Link
What happens next?
• Continue to refine the design.
• Start early works including
further survey and
geotechnical works and utility
relocations.
• Site compound establishment.
• Inform the community about
the design changes.
