Congrats! We’ve come to the very pinnacle of the Value Ladder. This final step takes all of the elements from our previous steps and the ideas behind them to a whole new level. I’m talking about High-End Coaching Masterminds and Info Products.

The name of the game from the very beginning was scaling your message to reach as many people as possible. This entire Value Ladder was created to counter the very old and outdated way of thinking that most trainers have. The vast majority of trainers, and this is the exact reason why they don’t make as much money as they should, believe that they should be trading hours on the gym floor for money. One-on-one training is the foundation of our industry but it’s the single most common reason why fit pros burn out and get frustrated. Every year, we lose so many quality fitness professionals who are unable to

shake off the old ways and adapt. They drop out or transition to other jobs despite the fact that going broke can easily be avoided.

It’s true! The ability to make money has always been in your hands. Whether or not you realize it, your ability to make money isn’t determined by how hard you work or how many hours you dedicate yourself to being on the floor.

Even if you were a machine that was capable of being available for your top-spending clients anytime, you’re simply going to be limited by time and money.

Your time on the floor is limited because there are only twenty-four hours in a day. And, by the way, you’re not on the floor twenty-four hours a day, so it’s more like anywhere from six to ten. But then you run into others sorts of problems, like the fact that most people can only be trained when they’re not at work.

So that also limits your ability to make top dollar. And the biggest reason to not live like this is that when you depend on one client to be there during that hour, you’re setting yourself up for failure because a million things can prevent you or your client from being there. No show, no dough.

The other hugely limiting factor is money. No matter how good you are, no matter where you live, and no matter how affluent your market is, you’ll eventually hit a ceiling on that hourly rate. You could be the perfect trainer and still only command a couple of hundred dollars an hour. That’s no way to build sizable long-term income.

On the other hand, there’s the system that I’ve created: the Value Ladder. This is where you focus on providing the maximum value to your customers. I’m talking about getting them to see the results of their work with you.

You have to show them a wonderful world where they are fit, happy, insanely productive at work, energized at all times with their kids, and able to engage with their spouses on a regular basis. In short, you are to transform them and have them see what a wonderful new version of themselves awaits.

How do you do this? I’ve been outlining that very system over the last few articles. You start with your already established customer base, probably through group classes, and you begin to offer them a steady stream of personalized services that provide them the tools for their transformation. You guide them along, taking them up the steps of the ladder. And of course, you provide this valuable service, whether or not you are actually in front of them. In fact, scaling and automation are the essential part of this whole process because the goal is large income streams that sustain themselves. Yes, we’re talking more money for less work.

When we talk about making top dollar for ourselves, we look for the value. And the value that we provide doesn’t just stop with our customers. All of us are surrounded by fitness professionals who, like the clients, have various degrees of ambition. That right there is another untapped market that you can provide instruction for.

This whole time we’ve been talking about reaching more people who need transformative services like the ones you provide. Our intent to scale and automate online has been with this idea in mind. Before this modern age of computers, a fitness professional was limited to the market that lived within a 5-10 mile radius. Now with eBooks, webinars, online courses and even events, you are literally able to reach billions of people around the world at any given moment.

So this principle applies whether we’re talking about nutritional supplements or the ability to install the Value Ladder into your business around the world. Our income is only limited by the scope of our vision.

If your vision is to be perfectly content with the market that physically surrounds your business, that’s absolutely fine. I’ve encountered all kinds of reasons from various trainers as to why my Value Ladder approach may not be for them. They’re okay with maximizing the revenue streams available to them in their local market. Not everyone wants to jump aboard these programs that could potentially generate for them a million or more dollars a year.

But believe me when I say that this has the ability to take your income to whatever level you choose. As long as you learn how to market these services to whatever group of customers you’re working with, you’ll see the immediate impact of adjusting the scope of your business. By dreaming big and filling in those dreams with valuable programs, you will earn that top dollar income. 

That expertise, which up until now has be relegated to your gym customers, can also be applied to your fellow fitness professionals. This new way of thinking in itself is extremely valuable and few, if any, trainers are able to have this vision for themselves. You can do as I do and transform the lives of these trainers by bringing the Value Ladder concept to them. You are now unlocking their potential to make millions and reach billions.

To really see this idea in action, I’ll give you the perfect example. A friend of mine, who is an established coach, was constantly getting kudos on his Facebook page from triathletes. I noticed that guys were leaving things like, “Thanks so much! Your help knocked ten minutes off my time. You’re the man!”. This kind of praise and gratitude was pretty common because he trained so many people that did triathlons.

I asked him how he did it, and whether it was a program that was in place. He said, “Well I do this, then I do this, and I do that."

Right then and there I pointed out that he had a system in place. He was able to take someone who wanted to run a triathlon and get them a

better time, every time. He did this time and time again for people of all kinds and all abilities.

I thought, this is perfect! I quickly showed him how if he turned it into a program, complete with videos and the like, and put it on the membership

site, he could make a significant amount of extra money. All he would need to do was to create a road map for it all and the people could jump in at any time without the need for him to stand there personally training them. He just needed to do it once and then sit back and watch the money roll in. 

I explained that a package like that could easily generate $500 a head. If, say, he got five people a month to join, that’s an extra $2,500 going to him every month. Could he get five new people on board every month? You bet! I showed him how to automate that particular program, but we didn’t stop there. The next step was scaling.

As I’ve explained in a previous article, the idea of scaling is an important one for a variety of reasons. That last triathlon program that I detailed brought in an extra $30,000 a year with just five people doing the program per month. That’s at the low end. If you charge more or bring in more people at that price point, you’re looking at even bigger numbers.

What if you took that very same program and now scaled it for the hard-core triathletes? These are the people that aren’t just running a triathlon, they’re looking to win it all. By marketing a more advanced version of the program toward this group, you can charge more and provide a higher level of intensive training, one where they get more access to you monthly to help them win consistently. You could be looking at $1,000 dollars or more per month per customer. With this program, you’re doing it all. You’re dialing in to help them with their nutrition, and setting goal markers. We’re talking the full press.

Now you’ve got five people at your front-end feeder program, your version of the program at $500, plus, let’s say, another five more at the larger $1,000 package. As you build both programs and get people the results you want, maybe you slide some of the novices eventually into your

higher program. Now you’re making a six-figure income from just two product lines: a high-end coaching group and an info product.

Do you see where you are continuously adding value to people whose ambition determines where they want to go? In this way, you’re letting the customer drive the engine. Their ambition is what’s leading you around. You’ve just got the products ready to go. No lost time offering programs that don’t interest them or that wouldn’t apply. There’s no waiting for them to develop an aptitude. You meet them where they are and provide the very thing that they’re searching for.

This is entirely a new way of thinking of this stuff and it will seem complicated at first. Remember what I’ve said time and again: it’s hard to shake off the old ways. It’s so hard, in fact, it’s easier to just keep doing things the way they’ve always been done. But then, you wouldn’t make the top dollar that you’re looking for.

A lightbulb went off when I kept encountering fitness pros that were maxed out on their time and accomplishments. They were successful in their fields and didn’t need anymore help with the training aspect. What I kept hearing was a desire to amplify their ambition and take their message to the biggest audience possible. Where is that? You already know the answer…it’s online!

They didn’t quite know how to get there on their own. The hard and fast rules that keep most trainers stuck in that limiting mindset were present even when the fit pros were extremely accomplished in their fields. It’s only natural. The whole technology thing can seem complicated at first.

What most of these fit pros lacked was an understanding of what their services were truly valued at. I met them at one price that they were charging and took them to the highest possible earning point. I told them, I’m going to take you to a point where your highest self, your best self, can start charging what you are truly worth.

By showing them the very steps that I’ve outlined for you in this and previous articles, I help them build a more complex business. I’m not talking complicated as in difficult to understand. I’m talking about a complex musculature of a business, where the parts all support one another. Doing this buffers your revenue streams. You’re so far away from that feast or famine mentality that dominated your life as a one-on-one trainer, that the way you’re living now will have you disbelieving that you ever had to think like that to begin with.

You’re now dealing with a business that has moving parts, an intricate (but not convoluted) web of revenue streams that prop up one another. If one of them goes down…no problem! The other parts of your business have you covered. Want to take a vacation and sail around the world? Go ahead, your system will be running just fine without you physically at the helm. That’s what money managers would call being diversified. Now you’re not vulnerable to dramatic shifts in your income. You’re making top dollar no matter which way the winds blow.

These steps should be personalized toward your strengths, but I hope that you understand the concepts behind the steps in the Value Ladder. When followed correctly, these steps can generate up to seven figures or more. Whether or not that’s your target, you can still use the ideas behind scaling to get your business to where you’d like to be.

The idea is to move people from one feeder program into another. People are complex. They decide dozens of choices a day. Your job is to be the one that provides them with solutions no matter which direction they turn.

It takes some getting used to, but once you have the hang of developing your own revenue streams, you’ll see that the type of program is almost inconsequential. Because you’ve established

yourself as a trusted source to their development, transformation, and ultimately happiness, you

will have a lot of business for a long time. Hey, you may not even have the time to keep up with the rabid demands of your customer base.
