By end-2009, we plan to open 25 new outlets in cities such as Bangalore, Hyder- abad, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh,” said Andy Marshall, chief operating officer-international, Costa Coffee. Costa Coffee currently has 1,300 outlets in 25 countries. It plans to expand this network by opening new stores in IT parks, airports and office complexes. Marshall said the company has continued to grow despite the slowdown. Currently, Costa Coffee has 50 stores in India through master fran- chisee Devyani International Ltd. “For the Indian market, our master franchisee Devyani International will invest the money. For other international markets, it is open to any kind of economic model such as joint ventures, franchise-based marketing or direct funding.” Virag Joshi, president and chief executive officer, Devyani Interna- tional said, “One outlet costs around Rs 50 lakh. But it largely depends on the location of the outlet.” Added Marshall, “With real estate costs heading south it would be easier to open more stores.” Under its new marketing strat- egy, local taste and flavours are being incorporated into its menu. For the IPO market as a whole, the numbers look even worse. All IPOs that have hit the mar- ket between January 1, 2005 and the latest IPO of Edserv Soft- systems in February 2009, have together given a negative return (loss) of over 28 per cent. How- ever, when IPOs of 2004 are added to this universe, the total loss falls to 12.78 per cent. IPOs are popular with retail investors, who perceive them as a relatively cheaper mode of entry into the stock, or as a means of making quick returns on listing, when the new share becomes available for trading. However, a new study exposes the fallacy of such beliefs in a bear market. Of the 278 IPOs through which Rs 1,08,932 crore was raised during this period, only 35 or 13 per cent are in the green, while the remaining 243 are in the red, a study by SMC Capitals highlighted. The IPO scenario in 2009, with barely one issue in the first quarter, reflects the economic slowdown that has set in about four months back. Long-term investors would have benefited from their investments only in IPOs that hit the market in 2004, which gave returns of about 60 per cent in the last five years to March 17, 2009 (marked-to- market), said Jagannadham Thunuguntla, equity head, SMC Capitals, who headed the study team. Investments in IPOs during the ensuing four years resulted in losses in the range of 19 per cent (IPOs for each year clubbed together) to 56.27 per cent. During the period under review, the benchmark BSE Sensex gained 2,991 points or 51 per cent from 5,872.48 at Jan- uary 1, 2004, to 8,863.82 on March 17, 2009. The number of IPOs that con- tinue to give positive returns have fallen gradually - from nine in 2004 to three in 2008. In 2009, only one issue entered the mar- ket — Chennai-based Edserv Softsystems, a web-learning, IT consulting and resource deploy- ment company. Priced at Rs 60, Edserv listed on the bourses on March 2 and rose to Rs 147.90 on the following day. However, since then it has continued to slide. It closed at Rs 34.20 on March 17. T HE highest number of IPOs was seen in 2007 at 103, followed by 2006 with 79 companies rais- ing funds from the primary mar- ket. Of these, only six and eight stocks, respectively, are in the positive now. “But IPOs of 2008 and 2007 are trading at the highest discount to their issue prices — 56.27 per cent and 44.39 per cent, respectively, as on March 17. IPOs of 2006 are trading at a loss of 19.03 per cent, while that of 2005 are trad- ing at 25.19 per cent loss,” said Thunuguntla. Sectorwise analysis of IPOs that hit the market in 2008 shows that none have given positive returns to investors (marked-to-market as on March 17). However, pharma and healthcare sectors showed some kind of resilience when compared to the Sensex. IPOs from pharma and healthcare players that hit the market during 2008 fell 8.33 per cent and 32.16 per cent, respec- tively. However, compared to the 52.45 per cent fall in the Sensex during 2008, these stocks performed better. During 2008, however, investors in banking IPOs suf- fered a huge loss of 89.96 per cent, followed by those in retail, manufacturing and textiles sec- tors, all of which recorded losses of over 80 per cent. None of the major sectors that raised funds in 2007 gave posi- tive returns at the current prices. But infrastructure com- panies that raised funds in 2006 are in the positive pale, giving a return of over 35 per cent even at current prices. Analysis of the performance of IPOs that hit the market in 2006, 2007 and 2008 shows that the pricing of IPOs was more reasonable in 2006 than in the later two years. By B.S. Costa Coffeerolls out bigplans for India

INDIA is big on Costa Coffee’sexpansion plans — ten per centof the UK-based coffee chain’snew outlets planned for 2009are set to be opened in India.

“In 2009, the company plans toopen 250 stores. By end-2009, weplan to open 25 new outlets incities such as Bangalore, Hyder-abad, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Lucknow,Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh,”said Andy Marshall, chief operatingofficer-international, Costa Coffee.
