The Importance of Logistics
and Infrastructure in Coal
Mining
Coal Mining involves handling and transportation of large volumes of solid material at large distances
Logistics and Infrastructure form a substantial part of coal mining development and running costs
Marshalling yard at a coal terminal (USA)
Conventional Coal Field Logistic DESCRIPTION
Individual mines connected by rail spurs to the main railroad leading to the Ocean Terminal
Some mines transport coal by road to the ocean terminal
Rail, Road or Overland Conveyors connection from mines to
inland coal consumers.
Advantages :
No need for co-ordination between miners
Direct connection from individual mines to ocean terminal
Disadvantages :
Delays as each train should be formed on special request
Requires intermediate rail marshaling yard with multiple loops
to form the trains required by individual mines at given times.
Increased number of rail trucks required, uneconomical usage
of rolling stock.
New Logistic Concept:
Provide an “INLAND TERMINAL” supplied by all the
mines of a coal field by “Overland Conveyors”
Connect the “INLAND TERMINAL” with the
“OCEAN TERMINAL” by a “Rapid Rail Shuttle”
New Logistics Concept-INLAND TERMINAL
Advantages :
Faster and reliable in time delivery
Reduced number of rail tracks
Reduced costs in rail operations
Elimination of intermediate marshaling
Disadvantages :
Requires master planning
Requires financial co-operation between terminal users
Requires an “Inland Terminal” Operator
Additional options for “Inland Terminal” concept :
Integration of coal processing plant into the
terminal. Modular plant equipment to be
considered for future expansions
Junior miners would benefit from an Inland Terminal, particularly if provided with a processing
plant, if aiming for coal export.

CONCLUSIONS
1. THE LOGISTIC CONCEPT OF ‘INLAND TERMINAL “
MAY BE BENEFICIAL TO MOZAMBIQUE COAL
MINING DEVELOPMENTS, THERFORE IT SHOULD BE
TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION BY ALL STAKE
HOLDERS.
2. LOGISTIC MASTERPLANS SHOULD BE PRODUCED
FOR FUTURE COAL MINING DEVELOPMENTS OF
VARIOUS COALFIELDS IN MOZAMBIQUE
3. NEW INFRASTRUCTURE COMPONENTS WERE
DEVELOPED AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR
APPLICATION IN MOZAMBIQUE COAL MINING
DEVELOPMENTS
