The New Touch-Face of Vending Machines A new breed of vending machine is proliferating around the world — and while the United States is

coming late to the party, Dr Pepper and Baby Ruth are already feeling sidelined.

Flashy and futuristic, souped-up machines are popping up everywhere, be it the Mondrian hotel in Miami or at Macy’s in Minneapolis. They have touch screens instead of buttons, facades that glow and pulse, and technology intended to blunt vending machine rage — sensors that ensure that a customer’s credit card is not charged unless the chosen item has dropped. These machines are not for quarters: purchases are measured in dollar amounts that typically start at two figures and go up.

Changing consumer preferences about shopping and the high cost of operating brick-and-mortar stores are inspiring premium brands to rethink how they sell their wares. As Gower Smith, whose company, ZoomSystems, has created about 1,000 automated kiosks called ZoomShops, put it, “A ZoomShop costs less than an employee.”

And with examples overseas showing there is money to be made, the so-called automated retail store (the term vending machine is so Industrial Revolution) is venturing into fashion, beauty products, electronics and more.

A ZoomShop can generate as much as $10,000 per square foot in sales a year, he said, compared with about $330 in sales per square foot for the average mall store.

Customers get immediate gratification and are comfortable with the technology, while the ZoomShops offer its clients a way to offer brand-name items without hiring employees or having to lock expensive items in display cases. And a ZoomShop inside a mall occupies little space and uses little electricity.

There are about 90 ZoomShops in Texas, including 17 in the Houston area. They apparently have a 5 year contract with the exchange….

The Automated Retail opportunity is proven

Coinstar has begun to deploy Automated retail machines called “Chirp”

One of the newest automated kiosks, called Chirp, was installed at five H-E-B groceries in Houston in February and at five H-E-Bs in San Antonio a few weeks ago.

At the H-E-B on Blackhawk Boulevard near I-45 South and Beltway 8, the Chirp kiosk machine is positioned by an exit. In the window display Tuesday were five designer bags ranging in price from $44.99 to $139.99. Each bag was made by a different designer: Coach, Juicy Couture, Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole and DKNY.

Customer Fay Bariya spent several minutes in front of the kiosk machine.

"I always look," she said. It has become part of her shopping routine to see what bags are on display before she leaves the store.

At the time Coinstar was founded, people wouldn’t have even thought about renting a movie at a kiosk. Today with the proliferation of personal computers, mobile devices and the Internet, consumers are very comfortable using self-serve devices. Coinstar’s redbox® DVD rental kiosk came on to the scene in 2004 and has rented more than one billion DVDs at over 30,000 kiosks across the U.S. – evidence of rapid consumer acceptance.Automated retail is the delivery of retail products and services to consumers via self-service, interactive kiosks, and we believe there is ample room for innovation and growth. Coinstar’s core strengths are steeped in automated retail as demonstrated by our two leading brands redbox® DVD rental and Coinstar® coin-counting, and we continue to actively explore other automated retail concepts that fill a need and make consumers’ lives easier. Not only is automated retail an exciting and sustainable platform for growth for the company, it serves both our retailers and consumers.Retailers need solutions that will reduce costs and increase traffic and their bottom line. Automated retail positions retailers as leaders in innovation – in fact, nearly 80 percent of consumers say they are more likely to do business with a company that offers the flexibility of self-service. In addition, retailers can select products and services that complement their businesses without significant outlay of time and money and reduce labor costs by shifting labor-intensive practices to a self-service solution. Other benefits include a broader selection of products and services and reduced shrink. From a consumer perspective, automated retail puts them in control. Research indicates that 97 percent of consumers will use self-service, which provides them with quick, simple and convenient solutions to satisfy immediate needs. In addition, self-service often offers a lower cost alternative to the fees paid for human assistance. As automated retail grows, expect to see Coinstar at the forefront with solutions that deliver value and convenience to consumers and opportunities for increased revenue and traffic for retailers.

Coinstar, which operates the Redbox video kiosks, is trialing several concept kiosks, including "Gizmo, an "eBay-in-a-kiosk" concept, where discounted, refurb

ished electronic devices will be sold directly to customers. Gizmo Gregg Kaplan, Coinstar's president, also announced that the company has been trialing several kiosks, including Gizmo, an "eBay-in-a-kiosk" that sells discounted, refurbished electronic devices, and Face Cube, an Internet-connected photo booth. He also said that the company made a recent investment in EcoATM, a San Diego-based company that recycles electronics. Chirp spokeswoman said the focus is “designer fashions brands," she said, adding that Chirp merchandise is discounted from 30 percent to 75 percent off retail price.

Customers get immediate gratification and are comfortable with the technology, while the ZoomShops offer its clients a way to offer brand-name items without hiring employees or having to lock expensive items in display cases. And a ZoomShop inside a mall occupies little space and uses little electricity.Coinstar has already deployed 15 Chirp kiosks and has plans for 30 to 40 more this year

Page 11: Locks ppt

And then there's "Gizmo," a kiosk that would take essentially compete with the Best Buy-branded kiosks that have appeared in airports and other locations, selling high-value electronic merchandise that doesn't take much physical space. Coinstar's target is what the company estimates to be a $150 billion consumer electronic market.

"[O}ne of the things that we've discovered is that there's a significant proportion of consumers in America that have never gone to eBay and will never go to eBay, yet are very interested in buying a consumer electronics device that might be three or four or five months old, may not be right off the assembly line, or may not be just cutting-edge, but they'd get it at a significantly discounted value and that's driving their interest," said Gregg Kaplan, the president and chief operating officer of Coinstar.

"So, for that market opportunity, we created something that we're calling Gizmo," Kaplan added. "And what Gizmo is is exactly what I just said, which is it's used and refurbished consumer electronic products. So think laptops, game consoles, Xboxes, GPS devices, digital cameras, iPads, iPods, those kinds of things, where they're offered at significant discounts. And these are refurbished products which are also guaranteed for a quality perspective, so if you don't like the product, as a consumer, you can return it no questions asked."
