LAB DECONTAMINATION

CHECKLISTMake Sure All Your Bases Are Covered

Remove all chemicals from lab andproperly dispose of or transport tothe new facility.

Conduct a decommissioningassessment report. This shouldinclude details of all chemicals usedand copies of existing permits.

Prepare a decommissioning plan (dosampling and analysis if needed).Include assessments of historicallyused chemicals in the area to ensureyou have the correct type of cleaner.

Decontaminate everything used toprocess or store biological material.These should also be washed withindustrial grade cleaner.

Decontaminate non-permeablesurfaces with industrial grade cleaner. Treat equipment used to process andstore chemicals. This includes benchtops, drawers, cabinets, floors andwalls, chemical storage areas, coldrooms, neutralization tanks and more.

Decontaminate everything used tostore radioisotopes. A radiation surveymust be performed and recorded onform RC-14, if radiation is detected. Allsurfaces must be cleaned untilradiation is no longer detected. Werecommend calling in professionals forhelp.

Complete and sign a decontaminationcertificate

Don’t forget the small stuff: drainvacuum pumps, remove colorimeters,and decontaminate fume hoods, payingspecial attention to the chemicals usedthere.

Assess and relocate or dispose of alllaboratory equipment properly. Payattention to sharps, broken glassbroken containers, etc.

If ethidium bromide was used in the lab,then know where it was used. Useappropriate cleaner and tools to ensureit’s been properly removed.

If your sinks or fume hoods have traps,do a mercury assessment.
