The contractor for the North ramp rehab and construction project will get the notice to proceed on July 2nd. The construction will have sev- eral phases and involve: The paving of some of the existing grass areas around Showalter’s shade han- gars and tie-down areas, leveling the hump in the pavement from our new t-hangars to the old ramp (yes, that means the orange cones will go away!), and rehabbing and seal-coating the existing ramp surface (including inside the shade hangars) from the fuel farm all the way to the corner of Hangar 79 by the helicopter parking. On an as needed basis, we will temporarily relocate aircraft in the areas being worked on to keep them safe from construction dirt and debris. Our goal is to com- municate where your aircraft is located. Additional advanced notice for aircraft re- quests during the construction will be very helpful as well. If you arrive and do not find your airplane where you left it, please call or stop by the desk and we will help! We are very excited that upon completion of this project, our ramp will be the big- gest and nicest host ramp for the NBAA Static Display. With these improvements, NBAA is planning to have additional dis- play space for the upcoming convention and is anticipating 120 aircraft on dis- play! This project is being fully funded by FDOT funds from the State of Florida. North Ramp Rehab and Construction Update

Ready...set...go! The contractor for the North ramp

rehab and construction project will get the notice to

proceed on July 2nd. The construction will have sev-

eral phases and involve: The paving of some of the

existing grass areas around Showalter’s shade han-

gars and tie-down areas, leveling the hump in the

pavement from our new t-hangars to the old ramp

(yes, that means the orange cones will go away!),

and rehabbing and seal-coating the existing ramp

surface (including inside the shade hangars) from

the fuel farm all the way to the corner of Hangar 79 by the helicopter parking. Con-

struction is planned to begin the first week in July and wrap up by the end of Au-

gust.

What does this mean if your aircraft is based in or around the construction zone?

On an as needed basis, we will temporarily relocate aircraft in the areas being

worked on to keep them safe from construction dirt and debris. Our goal is to com-

municate where your aircraft is located. Additional advanced notice for aircraft re-

quests during the construction will be very helpful as well. If you arrive and do not

find your airplane where you left it, please call or stop by the desk and we will help!

We are very excited that upon completion of this project, our ramp will be the big-

gest and nicest host ramp for the NBAA Static Display. With these improvements,

Lodi’s Lowdown

Lodi’s Lowdown for the month of June was correctly answered by Nicholas

Musashe, Dave Gardner, Kevin McNamara and Wendy Gorham. During the Space

Shuttle program, there were shuttles simultaneously on both launch pads 19

times. Thanks for answering!

The question for July is:

Take a wild guess…

In 1951, how much did Showalter Flying Service charge for

one gallon of 80 octane fuel and one night’s tie-down?

Please email your answers to [email protected].

Showalter Flying Service would like to congratulate two of our favorite charities

for being recognized for their volunteer efforts. The following excerpts ap-

peared in an online article on the NBAA’s website on June, 27th, 2012 under the

NO PLANE, NO GAIN tab:

Angel Flight Southeast received the “2012 Healthcare for Heroes” award from

the Greater Miami (FL) Chamber of Commerce for its work in disaster re-

sponse and emergency support in the Caribbean. The group is one of nine

Angel Flight organizations that fly patients who are financially distressed or

cannot travel by other means for treatment in a distant location, all without

charge. It also flies abuse victims needing relocation, human organs for

transplants and more.

The award was in the chamber’s Institution/Program category. It noted that

the organization deploys more than 800 volunteer pilots who fly 1,500 mis-

sions annually, including more than 1,000 missions flown after Hurricanes

Katrina, Ivan and Wilma. The chamber cited examples of Angel Flight South-

east’s recent volunteer flights, including a patient needing an emergency lung

transplant; a two-year-old having multiple organ surgery; and a cancer pa-

tient who has repeatedly traveled from Key West to Miami for treatment.

The second charitable organization to be recognized recently was Bahamas

Habitat, a North Carolina-based volunteer group that conducts humanitarian

relief operations in the Caribbean. Bahamas Habitat has been nominated for

a 2012 Classy Award. The national Classy Awards are sponsored by Stay

Classy Inc., a service provider for non-profit groups. Its annual awards pro-

gram, to be held this year on Sept. 22 in San Diego, CA is described as “the

largest philanthropic awards show in the country.”

Bahamas Habitat was nominated in the disaster relief and international aid

category. Classy Award regional finalists will be announced July 9, and na-

tional winners will be selected before the annual Classy Awards ceremonies.

Aircraft volunteered for missions like those flown by Angel Flight Southeast

and Bahamas Habitat often belong to businesses that otherwise use the air-

craft to save time, increase productivity and serve small communities far

from major airline hubs. Stories of other missions carried out by volunteered

aircraft may be seen on the No Plane No Gain website.

Congratulations to both Angel Flight Southeast and Bahamas Habitat for your

recognition!
