Viola. You’ve got petiquette.
Start at the Vet’s
Dogs and cats need spaying or neutering--especially
when living in such close proximity to other animals.
This saves you—and other owners—multiple hassles of
an unwanted pregnancy or unwanted physical advances
on your precious pooch. Sexual harassment can’t be
tolerated in the pet kingdom either.
Dogs and cats also need up-to-date vaccinations when
living in apartments. Extra pre-cautionary shots for
Parvo and Bordetella are also good suggestions.
Minimize barking
You want to really reduce any barking issues or “certain
time of day” barking issues that may begin to develop
with your pet. Your pet’s barking can turn the most
innocuous sweet old lady upstairs into a death-
threatening, police-calling madwomen who reports you
constantly to the office. Stay on your toes and stop—at
all costs—your dog’s barking. Not sure how to stop your
dog from barking? We’ll cover that in another article, so
stay tuned.
Don’t Let ‘Em Go Out Alone
The great outdoors is for you and Fido, not you or fido.
Dogs and cats should never be left to wander outdoors
unattended. If you’re not there, your pet should not
be there either. Cats left to stray often go feral, get into
fights, or die. I think everyone’s heard the eerie, “child-
like” screams as two cats claw it out in the night—scary!
You don’t want your neighbor thinking you’re channeling
Manson right outside their apartment. Keep that cat
indoors and safe. The same goes for your pooch. Dogs get
run over and taken into doggy custody when out alone.
Patios Are Not For Pets
Rule #4 follows the same logic as Rule #3: Dogs and cats
should not be left unattended on patios or balconies.
You’re not planning on teaching your dog to grill out
there, are you?
Leash and Go
But when you do want to take Roofus out for some
exercise, outside is the perfect place to get that jog in. So
how do you practice “pet”iquette when out and about?
Dogs and cats need to be on a leash when out and
about. Leashing keeps Roofus from darting out in
front of cars and making Scaredy-Second-floorer-Sallie
fear for her life. Even if Roofus is on a leash, he should still
be controlled by you. Make sure Roofy doesn’t approach
children or others too fast, and that he doesn’t jump on
them, or look like he’s straining to get a piece of their leg.
And while we’re at it, make sure you’ve got updated
tags and the cool little tracking device in his shoulder.
You want Roofus to make it back home if anything ever
happens to him, right?
Pick Up After Your Pup
And of course, Rule #6 is a given: Pick up the little brown
presents your pet leaves all over the grounds…because
brown presents aren’t really presents, and they don’t
smell very good either. Simply take out a plastic bag,
stoop and scoop, then turn the bag inside out and tie.
Place in your nearest receptacle.
Get off on the right paw and keep management off your tail with our 8 Rules of Petiquette.

What’s so wonderful about apartment living??!??!?! I’ll tell you what’s so wonderful:1- NO LAWN!!! This is by far the number one reason to live in an apartment. You have no yard to mow. You’ll never have to pull weeds. You’ll never have to worry about taking care of a fire ant problem. You don’t have to waste water on the lawn to keep your grass green. No raking leaves, etc, etc, etc...HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!?!?!2- Freedom!!! There’s so much more freedom in an apartment.
You have the freedom to move anywhere you’d like at the end of your lease. You aren’t locked into a 15, 20, or a 30 year mortgage. It’s an obvious perfect situation for someone who likes to live footloose and fancy free.
3- The Benefits of a Pool without the WorkThis is my favorite. At apartments, you get the full use of their pool and deck areas, but never have to worry about the upkeep. With a pool at your home, YOU have to skim for leaves, YOU have to check the chemicals, YOU have to do all the work. In an apartment you can kick back and let the apartment management take care of that for YOU!
4- It’s Cheaper All in all and across the board, renting an apartment can be much cheaper every month than paying a mortgage. Plus your electricity bill is cheaper. There is no lawn to water, so your water bill is cheaper. It’s just plain cheaper.
5- Maintenance In a home, if your toilet breaks, refrigerator runs, sink leaks, door falls off it’s hinges, develop a pest problem, or any number of the possible things that can happen happens, you have to find a way to take care of the problem yourself. In an apartment, all you have to do is let the apartment management know and they will take care of it for you! (In a reasonable time of course.)
6- Free Gym Most apartment communities have their own fitness center on location provided for the residents. With state of the art equipment, these gyms are free and you don’t have to travel at all to get in a good workout. As a home-owner, you’d either have to build a home gym or get a gym membership that may cost you at least $40/ month. Eck!
Wonderful Reasons
six T o E n j o y A p a r t m e n t L i v i n g
Those 6 reasons are just the start of a long list of awesome reasons apartment living is so incredibly great. The apartment lifestyle is a cut above living any other way. What do you enjoy about apartment living? Tell us today!

Put Your Life Into
Your Environment
Your apartment reflects you. In fact, it should be a
spitting image of you! Have a bold, bright personality? Use
vibrant colors, fun paintings, and let in lots of light.
More reserved? Go with a neutral palette of colors, like
tans and whites. Augment with greenery.
Fancy yourself a funny guy? Take a bunch of jokes and hang
them throughout your place. Then everywhere you go...you
can still have a laugh. Is music your thing? Frame CD inserts
and place your equipment on the walls.
If you have some awesome apartment decorating ideas,
we’d love to know about them. Send your decorating
ideas to [email protected]. Include a
picture of your tip, too!

FUN FACT: More money is spent on gardening than on any other hobby!
(Be glad you live in an apartment and can put your money into a real hobby—not a chore!)
QUICK TIP:
Avoid confusion in your
community parking lot.
Park in your assigned
spot—or park around the
same place every day!
Picture This...Want to have some cheap fun with your nearest
and dearest friends? Have a picture party! Invite 5-8 creative types, hopefully
friends themselves (oh, and they need a digital camera).
Put out the board games, put on mood music, and bring out the snacks and drinks.
Then, set a timer that goes off every five minutes or s — time for everyone to take a
picture! Doesn’t really matter of what, as long as it’s a cool pic! Then create a slide show
for the group and email it out after!

Flat screen on the wall or a stand? What’s best in an apartment…hangingthe flat-screen on the wall or putting iton a stand?
Mounting a television to your wall will inevitably leave a few holes when you take the TV down. Some communities do consider this normal “wear and tear,” but some don’t. You may end up having to patch and paint the holes to avoid pay-ing any fees.
Also, even though you’re sav-ing space putting the TV on your wall, you’ll still need a DVD and stereo, and both of these have lots of cables that will run down your wall. You could try hiding the pesky cables with a tall plant or a dresser, but then you wouldn’t be saving much floor space, would ya?As an apartmentite, the choice is obvious...go with a stand. Don’t agree? We’d like to hear from you! Send an email to [email protected] and tell me how you made it work.

Do you leave the water running? It’s always good to be conscious of your water use. Often you’re sharing water usage responsibility with several other Apartments in your building, or several other roommates.
Do you leave the sink running the entire time you brush your teeth? Stop. Do you fill the washer to “full” when you only have half a load? Stop. Use only what you actually need each time. Just by following these two water-saving tips, you’ll save on your monthly bill and help our environment.
