The ASN has Material Value

For every 5% improvement in on-time delivery & fill rates, warehouse operations can reduce operating

inventories levels by over 2%. This is measured using EDI ASNs and physical carton audits.

Why is the ASN so Relevant?

• Massive trends in retail distribution– With spending down and costs up, retailers are forced to look inward

to save money– Retailers are updating their DCs to enable auto-receiving and cross-

docking – multiple channels– Driving huge increase in ASN requirements across all models: Drop

Ship, DC, Store etc.

• Can’t ASN receive PO and then actually receive it– There is no native NS ASN record– There is no native NS record before a PO that behaves like a PO

• ASN can be different than PO ( 1 ASN : many PO’s, or vice versa)– There is no concept of license plate or container in NS– Cannot bulk receive natively– Cannot bill and track variance against ASNs natively

• Cannot allocate/commit inventory for sale against ASN– ASN receiving cannot be easily made available for allocation to sales– Does not integrate properly to NS Available-To-Promise– Cannot include ASN in demand planning

Inbound – How Do I Make It Work?

Model #1: Fully custom

Custom Records in Netsuite to mimic precursor to PO

Receive against custom records with EDI support

Reconcile actual PO receipt with custom record receipt

Use native Expected Receipt Date, track ASN qty in

custom column fields on PO

Receive against native PO, no EDI support

Reconcile actual PO receipt with custom field values

Use intermediate location and receive with PO

Use Transfer Order to track ‘actual’ receipt, could have

EDI support

Reconcile PO receipt to Transfer Order receipt

Model #2: Minimal

Model #3: Use Locations

Inbound - What Is The Best Tradeoff To Make?

Model #1: Fully custom

Allows a robust methodology and process

for a specific scenario

Heavy customizations required and lack of future

support

Heavy training and staff expertise required to

maintain

Allows great visibility on PO but limits use cases with

vendors

Easy customization and easy updates

Training is easier, process is particular and not flexible

Lots of functionality to leverage

Requires advanced NS knowledge and ability (uses

DRP and DP)

Difficult to train and keep track of in reporting for

reconciliation

Model #2: Minimal

Model #3: Use Locations

Functional tradeoff

Customization tradeoff

Process/training tradeoff

Outbound – How Do I Make It Work?

Model #1: Fully custom

Custom Records in Netsuite to mimic precursor to Item

Fulfillment

UCC128 details for ASN against custom records with

EDI support

Reconcile actual SO fulfillment at time of

packing

Use rules for qty/item within a prepack custom

record(s)

Ship based on custom records

Custom batch label generation based on custom

records

Model #2: prepack batch process

Outbound - What Is The Best Tradeoff To Make?

Functional tradeoff

Customization tradeoff

Process/training tradeoff

Model #1: Fully custom

Requires extra pack step, but provides better

accuracy

Complex for one off, but solutions like Oz provide proven model for scale

Using EDI portal vs doing everything in Netsuite as part of shipping process

Scale becomes a problem with multiple prepack definitions per

trading partner

Proliferation of custom records and rules vs manual EDI portal

Dedicated process to onboard new prepacks/partners and

maintenance

Model #2: prepack batch process
