How to Pack Delicate Items for Shipping
If you run a business that ships physical goods then it’s vital that you know exactly how to package them in a way that won’ t result in any damage. Whilst some items are quite sturdy and don ’ t carry much risk of damage in transit, there are items that are extremely delicate, such as glass vases and ceramic.
One of the most annoying things for consumers is when an item turns up on their front door and it’s damaged or broken because of poor packaging. This is a sure-fire way to get bad feedback and put people off from wanting to buy from you in the future.
Things to Avoid
One of the most common mistakes people make when packaging delicate items is to use old newspaper. Not only does newspaper provide very little protection but it also looks very unprofessional like you couldn ’ t be bothered to purchase proper packaging equipment. Another problem with using newspaper is that the ink from it can very easily smear the items it’s being used to pack.
Another mistake when packaging delicate items is to use a box that is too large. The problem with using a box that’s much larger than the item itself is that it means it can rattle around a lot, therefore increasing the risk of it getting damaged.
Packing the Right Way
Now that you know newspaper is one of the worst packaging materials to use, let’s look at what you should be using. Packaging peanuts are by far the best packing material to use to protect delicate items. They ’ re relatively inexpensive and do an excellent job of protecting items from damage. They come in a range of options so you can pick the type that best suits.
In addition to using packaging peanuts to protect your items, you also need to get good quality cardboard boxes with thick walls. Because packages are often stacked on top of each other by courier services, you need to make sure your box can withstand a lot of weight.
Lastly, you want to use tough, durable tape to seal the package with. Regular household sellotape is certainly not strong enough to package an item well so you should invest in some proper packing tape that’s fit for purpose.
How to buy Packaging Supplies
Knowing the right type of packaging materials to use for delicate items is the first part of the equation but you must also know how to buy them for the best possible price.
As with almost any type of item, you can save a considerable amount of money buying packaging materials when you purchase them in bulk.
You might be worried that you’ll purchase more than you need but if your business is successful then you can never have too many packaging supplies. Just make sure that you have adequate space to store them. The general rule when buying packaging supplies is that the more you purchase in one order, the less each item should cost. Never be afraid to haggle with supplier to get the best price.
