The State of Ongoing EU Accession Preparations

COUNTRIES CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING OR PREPARING FOR NEGOTIATIONS• TURKEY first applied for associate membership in the EEC in 1959

and on 12 September 1963, signed the Ankara Agreement.

•TURKEY applied for formal membership in April 1987

• Was recognized as a candidate country in December 1999.

• The EU launched accession negotiations with Turkey on 3 October 2005

COUNTRIES CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING OR PREPARING FOR NEGOTIATIONS

• THE FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIAapplied on 22 March 2004

• Received status of candidate Country by the European Council in December 2005

• The Commission recommended launching negotiations

• This has not yet been agreed by the Council

COUNTRIES CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING OR PREPARING FOR NEGOTIATIONS

•MONTENEGRO applied on 15 December 2008

•Candidate Country Status in December 2010

•Negotiations will be launched upon satisfactory compliance with a set of policy conditions

COUNTRIES CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING OR PREPARING FOR NEGOTIATIONS

•ALBANIA applied on 24 April 2009

•Granted candidate country status at the June 2014 European Council

COUNTRIES CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING OR PREPARING FOR NEGOTIATIONS• ICELAND applied on 16th July 2009

•Was granted Candidate status in June 2010

•Negotiations were formerly opened in July 2010

• In mid-2013, the new government decided to put negotiations on hold and asked the EU to no longer consider this country to be a candidate to EU membership.

COUNTRIES CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING OR PREPARING FOR NEGOTIATIONS

•SERBIA applied on 22 December 2009

•Was granted candidate country status at the May 2012 European Council

COUNTRIES CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING OR PREPARING FOR NEGOTIATIONS

•BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA as well as KOSOVOcurrently have the status of being a potential candidate country.

•This means that the European Council confirmed to them the prospect of EU accession in the medium to long term.
