tretch marks, also referred to as as striae, are a type of scarring on the skin

with an off-color hue. If you got a fairer skin tone, you tend to develop

pinkish stretch marks. If you have darker skin, your stretch marks look

lighter than your skin. Even though they are ugly, they really don't pose any threat.

There are numerous myths that surround stretch marks and knowing the truths

behind them can help you avoid and tackle them more effectively.

Myth 1: You only get them if you are overweight.

Fact: The reason why stretch marks are common among overweight and obese

people is because their skins are overstretched. It is important to note, however,

that even folks who are fit can still suffer from stretch marks. These scars can show

up because of rapid growth, for instance, when you’re pregnant, throughout

puberty, and when you are a bodybuilder.

Myth 2: Only females get stretch marks.

Fact: The reason why stretch marks are more common in ladies is as a

consequence of pregnancy. Stretch marks during pregnancy are caused by the

growing abdomen and the hormonal changes that take place during this time. Then

again, one in four men will have stretch marks, too, like throughout puberty and if

they are into weight training.

Myth 3: Slimming down will make your stretch marks disappear.

Fact: Unfortunately, this isn’t always true. In reality, losing weight can make your

stretch marks seem more visible because the skin becomes loose. This should not

dissuade you from losing weight though. Carrying unwanted pounds will affect

your health more detrimentally than stretch marks.
