Finding the perfect family adventure holiday

If you are looking for a family holiday, it can be difficult to know where to start. A great tip is to make a list of what you really want from your holiday. Do you want something educational for your children as well as fun? If so the location is going to be very important. Perhaps you could think about taking them to somewhere like Morocco or Nepal or Bhutan in the Himalaya where they will experience a completely different way of life to their own and meet some wonderful wildlife in the process such as tigers, elephants and monkeys. Some adventure tours will even take you to meet local families and their children, perhaps even staying with them for a night, or camping in their village and learning about their way of life. Total immersion in the local culture will benefit both the adults and children in your group, really providing you with a holiday of a life time. Of course, a holiday such as this won’t be cheap but it will surely be one you and your children will never forget.

Family adventure holidays closer to home

If however you want something a little less exotic but great fun, you might prefer a family activity holiday in Europe. Whilst not an ‘adventure holiday’ in some people’s eyes, a vigorous walking holiday around the Mont Blanc area in France (for example) could well fit the bill when older children are considered.

When it comes down to it, companies like Mountain Kingdoms don’t offer holidays full of the ‘standard’ adventurous activities, where groups are sent at high speed down zip wires and the like.

No, it’s all very different with indeed their trips, on their holidays ‘high rope walks’ are reserved for getting across fantastic gaping gorges and rivers in often remote and exotic locations.

So if you want an adventure holiday that is truly adventurous, where you get to meet people of a totally different culture, seeing how they live, barter and shop as well as in many cases joining in with their celebrations, then a walking trekking holiday could well be the best possible choice for you and your kin.

How to pick the best family adventure holiday

Whatever type of holiday you go for it is important to choose one where the itinerary moves at the right pace for your family. You’ll probably want lots of structured activities but also enough free time to relax. Holidays which keep travelling time down to a minimum are important too. You’ll expect to travel some distance to get there, of course, but hours spent in buses and coaches during your holiday are hours wasted, and no fun for your children.

Adventure holidays are an excellent way for both you and your children to make new friends. Sometimes shared experiences can forge strong bonds, leading to lifelong friendships. Be careful though, there’s little point booking to join a group if the idea of spending a lot of time with strangers makes you cringe!
