ERP (Enterprice Resource Planning)

“techniques and concepts for integrated management of business as a whole from the viewpoint of the effective use of management resources to improve the efficiency of enterprise management.”[1]

[1] Alexis Leon,2008

Page 4: Exploring erp and gis integration

ERP implementation time 1-3 years and cost 1-3% of the turnover and still project fails [1]

GIS (Geographic Information System)

“technological tool for comprehending geography and making intelligent decisions” [1]

GIS maps are interactive - layers of information to a base map [2]

Objects, Attributes and tools to managebehavior [3]

[1][2] (ESRI,2007), [3] (Abou-ghanem & Arfaj,2008)

Integrating ERP and GIS

“Challenge is that companies implement multiple applications for a reason; each is designed to support

the needs of a particular user group in performing their specific task” [1]

Visualizing data maps more relevant than looking at data

Logistic : shorter order cycle, more reliable deliveries, better warehouse management and transportation cost under control [2]

Marketing :all marketing mix components [3]

Industry and Benefit

•Utilities (water, electric, gas, waste, recycling), Waterways, Airports•Ports, Oil and Gas Production•Defense and Public Security•Service Providers (Routing and Logistics)•Real Estate, Forestry and Foreign Products•Local Governments

• Improve Resource Utilization• Improve operational

efficiency• Improve workforce

productivity• Reduce service cost• Elevate customer service

and decision making

Options for Integration

Different ways of Integration [1]

1. Build or purchase software connectors that directly connect a given ERP and GIS package

2. Use passive middleware

3. Deploy frameworks for comprehensive integration with given GIS package from ERP vendor

Most successful integrations are by ESRI (World’s leader in GIS) and SAP (World’s leader in ERP) [2]

[1] (Elisabeth Horwitt, 2009), [2] (ESRI, 2013)

ESRI and SAP Integration

ESRI and SAP Technical Interfaces [1]

1. SAP RFC (Remote Function Calls) connectors 2. Third-party connectors - include the Way Control

Broker (CB) from Information Builders which is component-based and allows director connection to packaged and legacy back-end systems

3. SAP generic GIS connector – is passive middleware4. Third-party EAI (Enterprise Application Integration)5. SAP EAI (Enterprise Application Interface) – e.g.

SAP Exchange Infrastructure to facilitate the exchange of information in terms of protocols, connectivity and format

6. ESRI’s partner solutions - The SICAD-APX (application exchange) is an EAI solution from AED-SICAD (an ESRI partner)

Sivan Design and its Geo-ERPTM

[1]

• Sivan Design – customized GIS solution with ERP

• Geo-ERPTM – consists of 3 platforms• LAPS - Land and Properties System• IGIS - Infrastructure Geographic Information

System• CMMS - Contracts Management and

Maintenance Sys

Worldwide Cases

Enmax Corporation in Canada [1]

Data architecture of Oracle Reduced redundancies and encourage cross

flow of information

Germany-ivl GmbH [2]

Indian Cases - 1. Cochin Port [1]

[1] (TCS Client Experience Case Study, 2009)

• Autonomous body under Gov. of India• 13 million metric tons of cargo and 100 vessels

• Increased demand for operational efficiency, effective facility management, security management – need for IT System!!!

• Port Information System (iPINS) – SAP based ERP with the help of TCS

• Operational, Financial, Estate and HR system with real time interface to Indian customs, port users, Banks and port community system of IPA

• Tabular data into maps to visualize spatial data of land

assets

2. Reliance [1]

[1] ESRI’s Case Study of RInfra

• Rinfra distribute electricity to more than 25 mn consumers across India – MP, AP, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Delhi, Mumbai• To map, model and manage its asset, maintenance and operation.

• GIS with SAP (PM and CCS module) and SCADA (Supervisory control and data acquisition) – real time data analysis and updates• Helps find work order location and find related faults – reducing resolution time and increasing customer satisfaction• Field Crew – GIS based operations & maintenance application to manage outages and energy audits• Decision Makers rely on GIS for visual representation of network, facility search option, work order management

Page 14: Exploring erp and gis integration

3. Torrent [1]

[1] (BizTech2.com, 2008)

• Generation capacity of 1647.5 MW (500 MW operational)

• 10 bn units of power distribution to Ahmedabad, G’nagar and Surat with 2.25 mn customer base

• SAP based ERP for an entire organization

• further integration with GIS and SCADA to enhance customer service level

• Identifying customer’s connectivity with the Network Asset, Network Mapping, Distribution Network Modeling, Load Flow Analysis, Meter Management and Outage Management

• Determining technical loss, network planning, optimization of distribution system and load forecasting
