What are emotions?
Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC
Emotions are PHYSICAL and MENTAL states that predispose action and are usually produced by perceptions of situations we encounter.
• Emotions are produced when we experience a change in the flow of life.
• Emotions reside in our bodies as well as our minds. (A shift in our mood produces biological modifications i.e. slower heart rate, a higher level of adrenaline, sweating, fatigue, stomach ache, etc.)
• A shift in our body can change our emotions.
• Posture can indicate a particular mood i.e. contraction and expansion
• Emotions show up in our language and our voice.
• Emotions are a key component of learning
• Emotions affect our possibilities

Emotions Affect ALL decisions
Think of a recent
decision you made…
Ask yourself why you made it …repeatedly.

A Brain that Cannot Feel Cannot Make Up It’s Mind
Before a person can make a decision, impulses tied to information travel to and from the neo-cortex and limbic
cortex. Emotional reactions to that information determine the decisions an individual makes in any situation.
All decisions depend on emotions. According to Lehrer (2009), “A brain that can’t feel can’t make up its mind.” Even
for those who are very logical, brain research shows that conscious decisions are dependent on the limbic cortex, the emotional part of the brain (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon, 2001).

Limbic Resonance
•
•
Because of Limbic Resonance, the physical body changes in response to one’s own emotions and in response to emotions of other people. Changes in respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and hormones consistent with other peoples’ emotional states occur when interacting with other humans, particularly when looking into their eyes (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon, 2001).

This means that:•We can sense other peoples’ emotions by accessing our own.•Other people can physically sense our emotions. •Leaders should be aware of what emotions they are generating.

We Learn Emotions Through Immersion
Emotions are
learned; they are
not inborn.(Goleman)

Learning Emotions is Different than Learning
Physics
•If we were around people who laughed a lot, we have a greater capacity to laugh.
•If we never learn enthusiasm, we don't show it.
•We can change our emotional impact through awareness and thoughtful reaction to what we observe.
•We can also change our emotions through coaching.
