Mandate M/515 EN - Amending Existing Eurocodes and Extending the Scope of Structural Eurocodes

In general

• extension of existing rules for the assessment of the existing buildings and structures

• extension of the existing horizontal rules for robustness

• development of additional structural Eurocodes covering structural glass members, FRP and tensile surface structures

• reduce the number of Nationally Determined Parameters (NDPs)

• improve the usability of Eurocodes by practical users

• incorporate recent results of international studies and the practical experience from scientific and technical associations

• adoption of relevant ISO standards to supplement the Eurocodes family (atmospheric icing of structures and actions from waves)

• development of auxiliary guidance document

• provide a clear and complete list of background documents used during the standardization process

• simplification of rules for limited and well-identified fields of application.


Mandate M/515 EN - Amending Existing Eurocodes and Extending the Scope of Structural Eurocodes

Detailed Work Programme (118 pages)

• Transfer of Basis of Design rules from EN1991-1-6, EN1991-3, EN 1991-4, EN 1993-3-1, EN 1993-3-2 and EN 1991-7 to EN 1990

• Vibrations – comfort of people – extend rules based on research carried out since 1st edition of EN 1990

• A new set of codified rules for use of Non-linear F.E.M. in design

• Guidance for Lateral Stability of Structures

• The collection of available national snow and wind maps

• Establish a well-documented background information for determination of partial safety factors

• The use of stainless steel reinforcement

• New rules for the verification / design of concrete structures containing metallic and non metallic fibres

• Improvement of the serviceability rules for vibrations caused by pedestrians

• Reinforcement of timber structures


Format of the Eurocodes • The clauses in the Eurocodes are divided into Principles and Application Rules • The Principles comprise: General statements and definitions for which there is no alternative Principles are preceded by the letter P and have the verb “shall”

• Application Rules are examples of generally recognised rules, which follow the Principles and satisfy their requirements and have the verb “should”

It is permissible to use alternatives to the Application Rules given in Eurocode, provided it is shown that the alternative rules accord with the relevant Principles and are at least equivalent with regard to the structural safety, serviceability and durability
