Hello there! Would you consider participating in an art project I’m working on? I’m preparing an installation on UD’s campus called “coming to terms with being female.” The installation will explore issues such as body images in western media, gender expectations, and motherhood. Being a woman seems to come with all sorts of societal expectations regarding how we should act, look and behave. These expectations, transmitted implicitly through tradition and media have both positive and negative psychological implications on the female psyche. However, this piece is not a protest- but rather an unearthing of some of the experiences that come along with female identity (both celebrations and struggles); experiences which I believe warrant greater conversation and awareness among all genders. OK...still interested? No? no problem. Yes? Great! Proceed through the following steps: 1. Print, in color, the attached .pdf image. It is a wallpaper border, designed by yours truly, that will be displayed in the installation room. The border incorporates some decorative lady parts, and when it is displayed, it will symbolize how women shape each other in our identities and how we are all connected. 2. On the reverse of the image, share a short story about one of your own experiences coming to terms with being female. This can be anything you’d like, from any part of your life recent or in the past This could be about anything that relates to being female (i.e. motherhood, wifehood, choosing not to be a mother or a wife, body image, being fat, not being fat, periods, menopause, fertility, the beauty industry, fashion, housework, women in the workplace et. al).

3. You may include your name and age, as well. If you do choose to include your name, it will not be associated with your story, since it will be written on the backside of the border. I will be recording a reading of all the stories, in no particular order, to play in the installation (without the names). If you do choose to include your name, I will only mention it in a thank you to contributors. If you’d prefer to participate anonymously, that’s fine too. 4. Please send to me @ STC, 5 Courtney St, Newark DE 19716. 5. I am hoping to get at least 40 contributions by May 15th. If I reach this goal, I’ll collect all the stories and make a little publication to send back to you, so you can see how the installation went and read other’s stories. So please include a return address. 6. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any of the following places: a. Email: [email protected]. Website: http://udel.edu/~stc/art307/project1c.
