Difference between V belt and Timing Belt

V Belt:- V belt is the belt seen externally under the bonnet driving the water pump, alternator for

battery charging and the cooling fan drive for the radiator. Another V belt is also found to drive the air-con pulley from the same crankshaft pulley. Worn out belts can be visually inspected by their look or by slackness beyond tension adjustment.

V-belts were the standard accessory [alt, Power steering, WP, AC] drive belt before the serpentines.

Application

Timing Belt:- Timing belt is a special cogged (toothed) belt driving the the camshaft and covered by the timing

case. Replacement of timing belt is a specialist job as mismatch of timing marks while installing a new timing belt would result in change of valve timings & cause misfire.

Timing belts are normally covered and run from a crankshaft pulley to the camshaft, hence Timing the cam; they may also run a balancer, oil pump and over or under an idler/tensioner.

Timing belt is inside a cover and it connects the crankshaft with your camshaft to keep your valves opening properly.

A timing belt has cogs so it can't slip.
