For more than a decade, The Colorado Technology Association has hosted DEMOgala
and selected Apex Award winners to let the community in on what the most innovative
technology entrepreneurs across the state are doing and to honor and celebrate their
accomplishments.
At DEMOgala, start-ups and established businesses of all sizes gain recognition from
peers and access to connections that catapult tremendous success stories and growth.
New this year, DEMOgala is embedded in the inaugural Denver Startup Week,
spurring established companies and startups to converge, collaborate and learn
from each other, providing even more opportunities than ever before.
We supported the creation of Denver Startup Week, whose mission is to enhance
the sense of community and highlight Denver as an entrepreneurial center, because
it matches our mission to provide education, inspiration, and networking events for
the entrepreneurial community.
CTA is helping to transform our technology community into a thriving environment
in which innovators, entrepreneurs and businesses are able to grow and succeed.
This year’s theme is Velocity, because this has been a year of tremendous growth,
and we believe our community is putting our feet on the accelerator of real change.
Colorado is the most exciting state in the country…and others are taking notice.
We encourage you to grab some java and your business cards. Dive into all of the
events around you. Watch the demos. Interact with the exhibitors. Meet your peers and
exchange ideas so together we will continue to grow and thrive as a community.
Sincerely,
Gaining Velocity

Why did you create
Denver Startup Week?
No single person created Denver Startup
Week. It’s a community thing and it is led
by entrepreneurs. It all got started when
a number of passionate entrepreneurs
based in Denver were discussing the fact
that even though Denver had a ton of great
startups, there really wasn’t the sense of
‘startup community’ that other cities enjoy.
Each startup was an island without a
cohesive startup ecosystem that provides
support, networking, and opportunities. We
decided that we would just start building
the community bringing all of these existing
companies together. The Denver Startup
Bash was the first step; Denver Startup
Week is the second. We wanted to start
what is going to be an awesome annual
event to showcase Denver startups and
encourage the growth and development of
the startup community.
What makes Colorado’s startup
community unique from other
states?
Colorado has a very youthful demographic.
Most startups are started by 25–34 year
olds. Colorado attracts these demograph-
ics en masse—thanks largely to our quality
of life. Colorado is simply a great place to
live. Colorado is consistently rated among
the top healthiest and happiest states.
Boulder/Denver is usually rated the best
place for singles. Colorado is simply a great
place to live and to work.
How do you see the Denver
Startup Week evolving over
the years?
I’d love to see Denver Startup Week grow
in size and scope every year while main-
tain quality. There should be something
for every stage of startup where the week
becomes an educational event for those
looking to be entrepreneurs, a great launch-
ing point for new companies, and a place
for more established startups to network
and share.
Why is Colorado Technology
Association a partner in Denver
Startup Week?
One of the great strengths of Denver is the
number of well-established successful tech
companies. There is potential for hugely
mutually beneficial relationships between
these companies and startups. Established
tech companies can provide mentorship,
be potential customers or vendors, and
provide potential talent pools. Startups can
introduce innovation, leading edge technol-
ogies, new markets, and attract high value
labor pools to the area. CTA is a perfect
link between these two disparate groups
of businesses. CTA has been instrumental
in bringing a number of established Denver
companies to Denver Startup Week as
sponsor event hosts.
How can community leaders
help startups and why is this
important?
Have a plan on how you can offer your
services at a discount to local startups.
That may be transportation, parking, rent,
mentorship, or any service a new com-
pany needs. It doesn’t need to be forever.
Something that is just enough to convince
them to open their office in your community.
Startups bring a young, highly educated,
highly motivated workforce into the commu-
nity and when one of those startups hits big
it can completely change a community.

What’s in a name? It’s time for organizations to rethink IT from

IT knowledge.

transformation centered around the customer. Gain insights into

What if you could change how children are inspired to learn about technology?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in software development will jump
to 27.6% by 2020. There will be an estimated 143,800 jobs available to those that have
the skills needed to fill these roles. With a median annual salary of more than $87,000 for
programmers and a net positive growth in employment during a time of deep recession;
why isn’t the next generation getting into technology related fields?
Introducing Colorado Technology Associations’ Invest4Tech, created by board member,

The same pioneering spirit that attracted
the early settlers here years ago—powers
the persistence that fuels successful busi-
nesses today. Whether inspired by the
spectacular landscape or the culture of
rugged individualism that shaped it,
the state’s technology leaders are finding
new opportunities to address consumer,
business or even general societal needs.
Colorado’s Entrepreneurial EdgeDespite the economic challenges that started more than 4 years ago, Colorado’s budding
entrepreneurs have identified niches and opportunities for launching new technology
solutions. As a result, Colorado’s entrepreneurial communities are leading in innovation
and ingenuity driving the state’s economic recovery.
What attracts technology entrepreneurs and
businesses to Colorado? There isn’t just
one reason for the vibrancy of
Colorado’s technology community, but a
convergence of activities that are setting
this state apart, including:
n Second most educated population
per capita of individuals with advanced
degrees
n Diverse technology industries, including:
hardware, software, digital arts, telecom-
munications, aerospace, energy
n Relatively stable geography from natural
disasters creating an ideal location for
datacenters
n Home to large research universities
and federal research labs
n Ranked second and third in Small
Business Loans and Private Equity
Funding, respectively according to
U.S. Small Business Administration
n Low taxes relative to other states that
compete in technology innovation
“Colorado offers opportunity for anyone
who seeks it and is extremely supportive
of its technology entrepreneurs, providing
them with numerous resources and
networks that are hard to find outside
of the state . What is also unique about
Colorado is that our community invests in
its next generation of innovators through
mentoring programs and collaborations
across industries . But while we do many
things right as a state, we still need to
invest in STEM if we are to foster the
growth of technology innovation well
into the future .”
—Steve Foster, CEO & President,
Colorado Technology Association
Colorado’s Environment
Another factor behind Colorado’s technol-
ogy entrepreneurial success includes the
mobility of its workforce. Today many
employers provide telecommuting as an
option for employees and a flexible work
schedule. This culture of mobility works
well with Colorado’s outdoor lifestyle,
helping to attract and keep highly skilled
professionals here.
Colorado’s environment attracts entrepre-
neurs who work hard, but also play equally
as hard as illustrated by individuals such
as Mike Stemple, a Colorado native and
sponsored athlete who started 14 technol-
ogy companies.
Like Mike, technology professionals are
attracted to Colorado’s healthy, innovative,
nurturing environment.
“Colorado is an amazing state filled with
people who have a focused mindset on
being the best in their field . This ‘culture’
attracts people who believe that they
can and will be the best at anything
they pursue .”
—Mike Stemple, Founder & CEO, Mosoro Inc.

Community
What sets Colorado apart from other states
in technology entrepreneurship and innova-
tion is its open community of mentors along
with government, business and non-profit
associations, like Colorado Technology
Association (CTA).
Colorado’s technology entrepreneur
success today and in the future will hang
on its continued leadership in building
coalitions of diverse groups. As we con-
tinue to work together to tackle the states
greatest challenges and celebrate its
amazing success, our single goal—our
commitment to Colorado will guarantee
our leadership in technology innovation
and a flourishing start-up community for
years to come.

At Colorado Technology Association (CTA),
we believe the alignment of public and pri-
vate sector resources on a statewide and
regional basis in order to strengthen the
technology industry is the means to expand-
ing and creating jobs within Colorado.
CTA serves technology companies and
IT department professionals by integrating
strategic industry partners to foster vibrancy
and growth.
Advancing Colorado’s Technology Industry! Colorado’s technology industry consists of networks of related businesses and organiza-
tions within an industry whose collective excellence, collaboration and knowledge-base
provide a sustainable competitive advantage.
CTA leads the Industry Roadmap,
a portfolio of initiatives driving continual
improvement in these areas.
n Build a business-friendly environment
n Retain, grow and recruit companies
n Increase access to capital
n Create and market a stronger
Colorado brand
n Educate and train the workforce
of the future
n Cultivate innovation and technology
The Industry Roadmap guides this public-
private collaboration. It is a result of tops
down and bottoms up strategic planning
activities. The Industry Roadmap is a
portfolio of initiatives that address gaps and
reflect opportunities to ensure long-term
economic growth. Initiatives are organized
into six core objectives in alignment with
the Governor’s economic business plan,
the Colorado Blueprint. These objectives
serve as a powerful framework for discus-
sion across state agencies, regional part-
nerships and key industry stakeholders.

What trends do you see in the
technology industry?
I see mobile technology continuing to drive
productivity and collaboration in the work-
place. As our workforce becomes more
mobile, our devices will continue to evolve
into tools that allow us to work seamlessly
at any time and any place.
What challenges do you see in
the technology community?
One of the biggest challenges we face
in our industry is finding high tech talent.
Views From The TopWe asked Andrea Young, CIO and VP of Development for BI Incorporated, to give us her
point of view on the trends and challenges in the technology industry today.
Customers are demanding new, innova-
tive technologies to keep up in a globalized
economy, but it can be difficult to find the
right people with the technical skills we
need to meet this demand.
We need to do a better job at inspiring
the next generation to get involved in
technology related careers and programs
like Invest4Tech – Project Kick-off with the
Aurora Public Schools is a move in the
right direction.
What can policymakers in
Colorado do to assist the
tech industry?
I would like to see policymakers increase
their focus on the technology industry
by incentivizing more tech companies to
relocate here.
We also need incentives for academia to
focus more on science, math and tech-
nology related fields, because we can’t
attract new companies, unless we have
the workforce to fill these jobs.

Industry Strategy and Awareness Programs
A core part of our mission is to be a policy watchdog and advocate
for your business, so that you can continue to innovate and grow.
As a 501 (c)(6), we carefully monitor legislative efforts that could
impact the technology industry in Colorado and lobby on behalf
of the industry—but we can’t do this without hearing from you.
The Forum’s focus is on engaging and unifying stakeholders to
build a strong collective voice to policy makers.
Technology is one Colorado’s most thriving industries. Topics in the
EcoDevo Forum include: retaining Colorado companies, growing
Colorado companies and job creation, developing communities,
funding growth and more.
Topics in the Education Forum include: the availability of qualified
and high quality talent to grow the companies in the industry. The
development of the future talent pool and entrepreneurial training
focused on developing new ventures within the industry.
Exclusive, Peer-to-Peer Dialog and Insight Groups
CTA hosts three C-Suite Forums: a CEO in Tech Forum,
a CIO/CTO Forum and a CFO in Tech Forum. These exclusive,
executive Forums create an opportunity for peers to develop and
learn from each other and to dive deep into issues, challenges and
opportunities unique to their position. The Forums provide senior
management a venue to openly discuss challenges in order to
gain a deeper understanding from each other and apply this

is CTA’s longest running
peer-to-peer group provid-
ing a variety of events from
content-rich speakers to
fun-casual networking. This
peer-to-peer forum started
in the fall of 2007 as a
once-per-year networking
get together that has quickly
grown to a program with
incredible speakers and
mentoring.
Informal dialog provided keen industry insight at the CIO Forum.
The Women-In-Tech Forum offers content-rich speakers, casual networking, and mentoring.
EcoDevo Forum builds a strong collective voice to policy makers.
Our amazing volunteers make it all happen!

What trends do you see
in the technology industry?
I see that mobile devices are changing our
lives and lifestyles every day. The United
States is currently at 105% saturation
of wireless devices - greater than 100%
because many people now carry more
than one mobile device. The items that we
know including our tablets, GPS systems
and portable gaming devices are being
augmented with new applications including
dog collars that send automated reminders
Views From The TopWe asked Bill Soards, President, AT&T – Colorado, 2012 CTA Board Chair, and Co-Chair of
Public Policy, to give us his views on the trends and challenges facing the tech industry.
to feed your dog and pill bottles that send
a text message if the bottle hasn’t been
opened for a pre-set time. Some of these
are entertaining, and some are potentially
life-saving.
What challenges do you see
in the technology community?
We expect to be able to access technology
at all times, and this in turn changes how
we interact with each other, how we work,
and how we play. I think that our society will
continue to evolve our business and social
expectations based on these availabilities.
What can policymakers in
Colorado do to assist the
Tech industry?
I think it is important that our policy makers
keep up to speed with changing technolo-
gies to ensure that our state’s companies
are able to invent, create, release, market,
and sell without excess cost and red tape.
We also need to make sure that our corpo-
rate tax structures are competitive and fair
to entice investment and expansion from
outside Colorado.
