About the Project:
As Principal Contractor, O’Brien Contractors recently completed a Design and Build project to extend an existing lorry park facility for NightowlTruckstop along the A5 Watling Street, near Rugby. The extension consisted of the construction of an additional 82 lorry parking bays.
The project comprised of a 10,000sqm concrete hard standing with associated storm outfall drainage including a 500mq attenuation tank and pumping station. The perimeter which is monitored by CCTV cameras installed by O’Brien has been secured by a 2.4m fence with electrical topping.
The managed entrance and exit to the new parking bays is controlled from a central hub by ticket machines and lorry blockers that are activated by a prepaid system. A security kiosk has been installed at this location for manual operations if required.
An upgrade to the entrance and exit roads from the A5 to existing fuel areas was also undertaken.
The design was required to meet the “Secured by Design” standards and as the new facility met the desired requirements it has been awarded a “Park Mark” certification, a police driven initiative to ensure a safe and secure area for both lorry and driver. It also enables control and monitoring of truck and trailer movements.

The truckstop had to meet the standards required by the police initiative Park Mark, there are only 7 other lorry parks in the UK that meetthe standard set by the Police and the parks must pass a full risk assessment before the Park Mark stamp can be awarded.
