April 12, 1980. A military takeover, led by Master Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe, killed the president of that time.
He took over as the de facto president after that.

1985. An election was held, which Samuel Doe lost. He replaced the officials with his own people, who announced that Samuel Doe had won.
A demonstration occurred, but was suppressed 3 days later, causing major anti-government feelings.

1989. A civil war started, and Charles Taylor, with the support of other countries, invaded Liberia.
1997. Charles Taylor was elected as President of Liberia.

Charles Taylor stripped Liberia from the revenue that she rightfully earned.
By diverting all the revenue from the timber into his own account, he took about $100 million from the government.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone formally accused Charles Taylor in March 2003, for deliberately diverting revenue into his own pockets.
Also, there were UN timber economic restrictions that were implemented in July 2003, after a long 2 years of discussion in the Security Council
