Nigeria, Africa’s most populous Country, has a population of over 170 million people. Currently the nation produces about 160,000 tons of cashew nuts annually. Cashew in Nigeria is grown in most of the States including: Kogi, Kwara, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Cross River, Edo, Nassarawa, Benue, Taraba, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Niger and Osun. However, the crop can grow in almost all parts of the Country.

Currently with our traditional seeds, cashew yields are low averaging 600kg per hectare. So achieving 1 ton minimum yield per hectare will prosper our farmers.

PROCEDURE FOR CASHEW PLANTATION ESTABLISHMENT

• Clear/prepare the land.• Peg the land to achieve right spacing.• Create planting holes April/may .• Within 2-3 weeks fill back the holes with soil removed.• Plant seedling June/July.

Findings show that the minimum land size that will make business sense for commercial cashew production should be 40 Hectares planted with hybrid premium cashew yielding up to 2 tons per Hectare.
