Different types of cases

The Formal Case:Describes a simulated or real-life situation faced by managementDeals with specific problem experienced by one company or by an industry as a wholeAnalysis of complex financial data that can cover 15-20 pagesOut of number of solution, one should apply some theories to derive the best solution.Usually discuss about long term, strategic decisionEg. What marketing strategy should FMCG company use when the sales are down?

Should WalMart enter into Indian market? What is the effect of advertisement in the sales of product?

The Case Study:Usually written, much like a news story, as a chronological history of a decision made by managementThe outcome and an analysis of the decision are presented and little access of information is given Management’s answer may not be the best answer2-3 page long and follows the form of a good magazine or newspaper article with lots of narrative to describe actions taken by individuals or the companyFocus on issues such as: Marketing processes, sales methods, company events, product failure & human resources

The Critical Incident: Gives little background information and usually presents a scenario in which the impact is greater on the interpersonal relationships than on the organization itselfIt involves more immediate issues.

“ What should we do now?”Usually opening paragraph throws you into the middle of a dilemma

“ A chemical manufacturing company had an explosion at a local plant”

Short ( 2-3 pages), which gives many of the possible solutions that can be developed. Usually it is used in company training program.
