“In J.P. Morgan Emails, a Tale of China and Connections”By: Ned Levin, Emily Glazer, and Christopher M. Matthews
Wall Street Journal
Presentation by: Austin Brown
The Situation
Gao Jue hired by J.P. Morgan despite several missteps Sexually explicit emails, botched work visa, bad
interviews
Son of China’s Commerce Minister Minister promised to “go extra miles” if son’s job was
secure
William Daley, then a senior exec, pushed for the hire of Jue Emails show several J.P. Morgan execs wished to leverage
Jue’s father’s position to their benefit
The Situation
Jue was set to be laid off but was spared Emails show that several execs were involved in that
decision
Jue has moved on to several companies and now works at Goldman Sachs
Daley left to become White House Chief of Staff from January 2011 – January 2012
J.P. Morgan facing fines for violating anti-bribery laws
Ethical Issues
Jue given preferential treatment in the hiring process because of benefits his father could give J.P. Morgan
Spared from layoffs for same reason
J.P. Morgan execs wanted to use Jue as a means to the end of having leverage over his father
Father allowed his son to be used that way
Individuals involved have moved on and are not facing any repercussions for their actions
