London Landmark Given New Lease of Life

The Grade II listed Battersea Power Station is a fa-miliar landmark on London's skyline. The former coal-fired power station is the largest brick building in Europe and, after being disused for a number of decades, it was announced in 2013 that the building would be redeveloped as a luxury residential and mixed use development.

The redevelopment will take place over 7 phases with the first phase being completed by 2016 and this £400million project will include the building of 866 new homes in this desirable part of South West London.

The project is being led by contractors Carillion and will cover a substantial area – reinvigorating the Thames based location, while keeping many of its original features. The first phase will comprise of a main block of apartments ranging from 8 storeys in the South, to 18 storeys in height at its maximum

before reducing to 12 storeys at the North of the block. The second block will provide 8 storeys of accommodation. Also included in the first phase of development will be a range of landscaping work.

Reinforcing solutions

SIG Construction Accessories has worked with Ca-rillion on a number of projects so the contractors came to Dan Dixon, National Account Manager, who worked with Simon McManus, SIG CA Busi-ness Development Manager, to provide a range of products to this build.

SIG CA provided a range of key products, but a particular highlight was the Couplers. Simon Mc-Manus explains, “There are lapped joints in struc-tures that are not always suitable for connecting rebar. In these instances couplers are sought after to simplify the design and help reinforce the con-crete of the structure.

Competition is always fierce when specifying cou-plers, and together with Ancon we provided the most cost effective solutions in regards to installa-

tion, while the product itself is of the highest quality.”

The specific product provided by SIG CA were Ancon MBT Couplers which are easy to install and achieve failure loads higher than 115% of the characteristic yield strength of grade 500 rein-forcing bar. They can be used to join imperial, plain round or deformed reinforcing bars and re-quired no end preparation to the threads.

Bespoke fire protection

SIG CA also provided technical expertise for a bespoke Promate fire protection package. Simon explains, “After speaking to Carillion about the fire protection products needed on the project, it was clear that they required a product to fire pro-tect the Ancon couplers which had been specified. It was a special bespoke product made specifical-ly for this job, the Promat fire protection used was developed via Ancon as they had to work with Promat on the design and check that it was suitable and fit for purpose.”

Ian Lockett, Area Salesman who was also in-volved explains, “The collaboration was to ensure the load connectors and the fire rated movement joint operated as a single entity, thus satisfying the criteria set out by the client.”

The team at SIG CA offered a flexible delivery service to Carillion as the development is in Cen-tral London, which meant bulk orders had to be delivered as and when needed to this busy site.
