Gorbachev? Great humanitarians?
Ghandi? Mandela? Daisy Bates? Popular?
Bill Gates? Steve Jobs? Gordon Willcocks?

How engaged are you in your business? What do you know? Who do you know?
Do you know Your businesses strategic imperatives? What’s on the risk register?

So what does a Manager do?
There are a few things a Manager does1. Plan2. Lead3. Organise4. Control
But what does that really mean?

1. PLAN Who makes plans for you and your
group? You? Someone for you? Head Office?
How is that done? Just appears? Workshop? Consultants?
Who is consulted?
“If you fail to plan, you should plan to fail”
So what does a Manager do?
2. LEAD How connected to the business are you? What is your Leadership style?
Autocratic? Paternalistic? Democratic? MBWA?
Are you an advocate? Do you lead your job or does it lead you?
“I’m their leader, where did they go?”
So what does a Manager do?
3. ORGANISE Right resources and people Who are the partners in your business? Do you know whats coming down the
pipe? Budgets Leave entitlements, HR issues? Audits, Reviews, Oversights, Licence
renewals?
“He couldn’t organise a (insert product / service ) in a (insert venue)!”
So what does a Manager do?
4. CONTROL How do you exercise control? Drive outcomes Set the tone for the work group Manage conflict Arbitrate on professional issues Be the light on the hill to others!
What does success look like to you?

Present it in usable ways Dashboard, graphs, embedded reports
etc.
Some tips to consider
You have to WANT to be a Manager, If you don’t WANT to be a Manager go do something else – its too important a job!
