Definition
What is “Action Research” ?
Action Research is a disciplined process of
inquiry conducted by and for those taking
the action. The primary reason for
engaging in action research is to assist the
“actor” in improving and/or refining his or
her actions.

When coming to the business point of view
managers find interesting in action research.
Let’s see why do they find interesting.
These are the reasons :
•It uses as an integral part of research. It
integrates thought and action.
•It is focused on the researcher’s professional
values rather than methodological
considerations.
•It allows practitioners to research their own
professional activities.
•It helps to improve practice at workplace.
•It helps managers in their professional
development by critically examining their own
beliefs and practices.
•It helps managers to be multidisciplinary and
work across technical, cultural and functional
boundaries
•It helps managers in implementing change
effectively. Action research is founded on a
research relationship in which those managers
involved are participants in the change process.
•It pursues both change in the form of action and
understanding through research.
Reasons contd…..
•It is problem-focused, context-specific and future-
oriented.
•It helps to develop a holistic understanding.

Action Research Outcomes :
In business, education, and healthcare,
action research can be a practical means
for
Improving practice
Policy
Programmes
In community development work, action
research is also expressly used to
empower community members.
Action Research and Organizational
Change
Action research can be utilized at the
organizational level to enact change
But while action research can offer
much to the management of
organizational change, it is generally
seen as a research strategy rather than a
core management strategy
A common goal in
action
research is to empower
practitioners to improve
their practice by
recognizing how they
can make a
contribution to their
own
learning and
development.
