Jeff Brown: True Green Capital Management came together to focus on opportunities within non-traditional energy and specifically within solar.

Mike Lorusso: We’ve known True Green from the outset when they began. When they came to us with the United Communities deal, that was a good fit for us.

Brown: Trinity Solar was looking for an equity provider, so we funded the final development and engineering, and then we went to the market looking for lenders, CIT was by far the fastest to understand the opportunity.

Rhys Marsh: The United Communities project is a 12 megawatt solar system at Fort Dix-McGuire, which is one of the largest military bases in the country.

Lorusso: True Green supplies solar panels on the rooftops of the housing community and then that allows them to sell power at a discount to what the utility would charge. We like to differentiate ourselves from our competition by providing value-added financing to our clients. So, the satisfaction we get from a transaction like this is to combine technical analysis, legal analysis and general due diligence.

Brown: What’s unique about pursuing a transaction like this that hasn’t really been done in the marketplace is that it requires a depth of expertise in energy, in project finance and in risk management.

Marsh: We would come up with a structure together and then some things could change though. So, on the fly, we were inventing new structures.

Brown: Working with the CIT team has been an extremely

collaborative experience, and that starts with the head of the group, Mike Lorusso. Mike had a strong reputation in energy project finance.

Lorusso: Personally, I was just pleased to be part of a transaction that had environmental, social and technical success. To bring these factors together was quite fulfilling.

Brown: It’s the intersection of working on something I believe in, with partners that I can rely on, and delivering tangible daily cost savings to military families.

Marsh: It’s really, really special to see all the panels installed here,

operating, supporting our military and helping with our country’s energy independence goals.

Brown: I hope to work with CIT on similar projects across the country. This is stuff that works, there’s no technology risk. It’s pretty amazing.
